Chile took its seat at the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) as a non-permanent member of the international body till December 31, 2015.
It marked the 5 time the South American nation has been invited to sit on the council and help uphold the UN's "principles of non-intervention and respect for international treaties", Chile's foreign ministry said in a statement 1 Jan 2014
During the 68th United National General Assembly held in New York, Chile's bid to sit on the council received unanimous backing of fellow Latin American countries, as well as countries in other parts of the world, Xinhua reported.
In addition to Chile, other non-permanent members joining the council for the next two years included Chad, Lithuania and Nigeria.
Chile previously sat on the UNSC from 1952-1953, 1961-1962, 1996-1997 and 2003-2004.

Serena Williams of United States defeated Russia's Maria Sharapova in straights 6-2, 7-6 to enter the finals of the Brisbane International tennis tournament in Brisbane on Friday.

Serena Williams will meet Victoria Azarenka.
Earlier, Victoria Azarenka overcame a shaky serve and another case of the nerves to move into the Brisbane International final with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over former No. 1-ranked Jelena Jankovic on Friday.
The reigning Australian Open champion dropped her first three service games and was facing three breakpoints in the opening game of the second set when she shifted the momentum with a winner she picked up on a half-volley as Jankovic missed her chance to convert the break.

Iron lady Margaret Thatcher has been voted the most successful post-war British Prime Minister by lawmakers in a survey in which Winston Churchill came a distant fourth.
The survey was carried out by Politics and International Relations students at Royal Holloway, University of London.
The former Conservative leader, who died last April at the age of 87, was valued for her decisiveness by MPs who took part in the poll.
The Iron Lady topped the survey in which MPs rated every leader between 1945 and 2010, a statement on the University website said.
Thatcher (average score of 7.4) emerged as the most successful premier, narrowly beating the former Labour prime minister Clement Attlee (7.3). Another former Labour prime minister, Tony Blair (6.8), came third ahead of the Conservative Winston Churchill (6.5).

Mumbai Police issue lookout notice against billiards champ FerreiraMumbai Police have issued a lookout notice against former world Billiards champion Michael Ferreira after he failed to appear before them in connection with a 425-crore rupees scam.
The lookout notice was issued against Ferreira in connection with a multi- level marketing firm QNet, in which he claimed to hold shares.
The Economic Offence wing has arrested nine team leaders of the QNet so far for allegedly duping investors by offering to sell products like magnetic disks, herbal products and holiday schemes through fraudulent practices.
