Well aware that it is its last chance to qualify for
next year’s World Cup, the Indian men’s hockey team on Friday left for Ipoh,
Malaysia to participate in the eight-nation Asia Cup to be held from August 24

With four key strikers — Danish Mujtaba, S.V. Sunil, Gurwinder Singh Chandi and Akashdeep Singh — ruled out of the tournament due to injuries, India’s forwardline is in shambles.
The list of injuries has made India’s road much tougher in the Asia Cup, a tournament which it needs to win to qualify for 2014 World Cup at The Hague, Netherlands.

Oman while Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan and Chinese-Taipei complete the Pool A

Samsung pips Nokia to become No.1 in India’s handset market
South Korean handset maker Samsung Electronics dethroned its Finnish counterpart Nokia as India's largest mobile phone maker in the last fiscal year by cornering 31.5% market share compared with 27.2% for the latter, Voice & Data survey revealed.
Samsung's extensive portfolio offering a range of handsets across price points and screen sizes gave it the edge over Nokia.
It ended the 2013 financial year with revenues of Rs 11,328 crore, a growth of 43.6%.
"Samsung handset prices range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 50,000 and come in varied screen sizes.
These two factors helped the company grab customer's attention, besides the product quality and new features," Voice & Data said in its survey of 30 handset makers.
Micromax Informatics, Karbonn Mobiles and Cupertino-based Apple have grabbed the next three positions after Nokia with 8.7%, 6.4% and 3.6% share of the market, respectively.
In the last fiscal, Apple made some disruptive changes in its sales strategy, which paid off.

Musharraf indicted in Bhutto murder case
Former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf has been
indicted by an anti-terrorism court in the 2007 assassination of ex-premier
Benazir Bhutto.
Musharraf, who has been under house arrest for last four
months, was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation
of murder, said state prosecutor Chaudhry Muhammad Azhar.
The 70-year-old former president was brought under
heavy security to the anti-terrorism court of judge Habibur Rehman in
Rawalpindi.
If convicted, Musharraf can be sentenced to death or
life imprisonment.
Musharraf denied the allegation on Tuesday in the court
and his legal team will continue to defend him in the case in which he has been
falsely implicated, the information secretary of his All Pakistan Muslim
League, Aasia Ishaq said.
Bhutto was killed in suicide attack in 2007 in
Rawalpindi when Musharraf was president of the country.
Musharraf had blamed her killing on Pakistani Taliban
chief Baitullah Mehsud, who denied any involvement. Mehsud was killed in a US
drone strike in 2009.
Apollo's $2.5-billion Cooper deal
Apollo Tyres' proposed $2.5-billion acquisition of US-based Cooper Tire is facing unexpected opposition from 5,000 Chinese striking workers in the eastern Shandong.
The acquisition, the biggest by an Indian company in the automobile sector so far, is also driven by the opportunity of participating in the Chinese market, which is one of the fastest growing automobile markets in five years.
The Chinese workers and the Chinese management fear a clash of culture with the Indian management and the risk arising from a deal funded entirely by debt, which will be leveraged mostly on Cooper's balance sheet.

New Zealand's Ryder banned over drug
test
Troubled New Zealand
cricketer Jesse Ryder was handed a six month ban on Tuesday after testing
positive for outlawed substances contained in a weight-loss supplement, the New
Zealand Sports Tribunal said.
The tribunal said Ryder, who has been in self-imposed
exile from international cricket since February 2012, tested positive after a
domestic match in March this year.
It said Ryder's sample showed traces of the stimulants
PBA and DEBEA and the batsman admitted he took two supplement tablets in the days
before the test.
The tribunal thought a penalty of six months
suspension was also appropriate," it said, pointing out the maximum
punishment available was two years.
The ban was backdated to April, meaning Ryder will be
available to play again in October.
The 29-year-old is one of New Zealand's best batting
talents, averaging 40.93 in 18 Tests, but his career has been marred by
disciplinary lapses and off-field problems.
