ADB projects India’s growth rate at 5.8% in 2013

Slow progress of economic reforms is expected to pull down India’s growth to 5.8 per cent in 2013 from 6 per cent projected earlier, an Asian Development Bank (ADB) report said on Tuesday.

ADB in April had projected a growth rate of 6 per cent for India in 2013.
iii. The growth rate, it added, is expected to accelerate in 2014 as slower inflation provides some scope for monetary easing that could boost investment and consumption.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in Jaipur said on Tuesday that India was likely to clock over 6 per cent growth in the financial year 2013-14, in the backdrop of government taking host of steps to boost sagging economy.

In India, slow progress in pushing through the reforms needed to ease business bottlenecks means growth is likely to be 5.8 per cent this year, slower than the previously forecast 6.0 per cent,” the report ‘Asian Development Outlook Supplement’ said.

DoT may slash entry fee for internet service providers

telecom department will shortly lower entry barriers for internet service providers, or ISPs, to shore up broadband penetration levels even as the government readies to roll out a Rs 21,000-crore national fibre optic network that will take high-speed internet to India's hinterlands.

A DoT panel has recommended a steep cut in the entry fee and performance bank guarantee (PBG) requirements for Category B & C ISPs.

The pan-India broadband subscriber base is at a modest 15 million and DoT believes entry barriers need to be significantly lowered to make the 175 million broadband users target by 2017 a viable proposition

Mere reduction of entry fees and PBG limits will not make any business case if ISPs in the "B & C" categories are not allowed to offer the full spectrum of telecom services, including voice over internet protocol ( VoIP), under a unified permit," said Rajesh Charia, president of Internet Service Providers Asociation of India (Ispai).
