Bharti Airtel plans cable link to boost net speed in
Bangladesh
Bharti Airtel will shortly launch an international fibre-optic
cable link to boost internet speeds in Bangladesh even as it readies to pitch
for 3G airwaves that will be auctioned by the neighbouring country in
early-September
Airtel is the fourth-largest mobile carrier in Bangladesh
behind market leader, Telenor-controlled Grameenphone, Egypt's Orascom and
Malaysia's Axiata. Bharti Airtel executives declined to reveal the company's 3G
gameplan in Bangladesh but said "the new fibre-optic cable link would
support the anticipated data thrust in the neighbouring country once
third-generation mobile broadband services get rolled out".
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BRTC)
will also allow telcos to bid for only 5 MHz or units of airwaves in the 2100
MHz band for offering high-end data services on the 3G platform.
Bangladesh relies entirely on a single undersea cable
system, the SEA-ME-WE-4, for global connectivity.
Due to this internet speeds and international voice
communications are often disrupted whenever the cable snaps or is down for
maintenance, forcing the country to opt for more expensive satellite
connectivity to keep its 30 million-plus internet users online.

Belgium King cedes throne to eldest son
Belgian King Albert II abdicated on Sunday in an emotional
ceremony that cleared the way for his eldest son, Prince Philippe, to ascend to
the throne.
The 79-year-old relinquished the throne in a concession to
his age and health. It is the first time that Belgium sees a king abdicate
willingly in the 182-year history of its monarchy.
Prince Philippe, 53, is the country’s seventh king. His
ascension to the throne was set to be formalized at noon (1000 GMT) with an
oath before parliament.
King Philippe, who is a qualified fighter pilot, wore the
uniform of a lieutenant general, complete with a sabre. Later in the day, he
was expected to change into the uniform of a general.
King Albert paid tribute to Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and
the country’s other politicians for all they have achieved. Mr. Di Rupo has
been in power since 2011, after Albert helped end a political standoff that
left the country without a government for 535 days.
