International News--

In Bangladesh, the ruling Awami League led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been voted back to power. It has secured over three-fourth majority in elections marked by low turnout and poll boycott.

Awami League candidates won in 107 seats out of 147 for which voting took place yesterday. Having won 127 seats uncontested, the party has now more than 230 seats in the house of 300-seats, which gives it a clear three-fourth majority in Parliament.

The results of eight constituencies were withheld as violence forced suspension of polling at several polling stations in those areas.

The Election Commission is also set to declare names of candidates elected unopposed in 153 constituencies where candidates of the Awami League and its allies appeared as lone candidates in the absence of rivals from Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 18 party alliance.

At least 21 people, including opposition activists, an election official and a law enforcement agency man, were killed in violence during the elections.

Political analysts said in legal terms the election was legitimate but the opposition boycott and low turnout cast a shadow on its credibility.

Government News Of India--
In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court on 6 January 2014 held that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) can audit the accounts of private telecom operators under the relevant provisions of the law.

A bench of justices Pradeep Nandrajog and V Kameswar Rao permitted the top accounting body to conduct audit of private telecom companies under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act.

It rejected the separate petitions of Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers (AUSPI) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) filed against the decision of Telecom tribunal TDSAT on the issue in 2010.

To achieve the purpose of audit, the operators had pointed out that they have already put in place mechanism of special audit as envisaged in the license agreement between department of telecom and the companies.

The CAG had vigorously staked its claim to audit the accounts and sought revenue sharing details from the telecom companies.
