Daily GK Update 13 December 2013

Time magazine selected Pope Francis as its Person of the Year on Wednesday, saying the Catholic Church's new leader has changed the perception of the 2,000-year-old institution in an extraordinary way in a short time.

The pope beat out NSA leaker Edward Snowden for the distinction, which the newsmagazine has been giving each year since 1927.
The former Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected in March as the first pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit. Since taking over at the Vatican, he has urged the Catholic Church not to be obsessed with "small-minded rules" and to emphasize compassion over condemnation in dealing with touchy topics like abortion, gays and contraception.
It is a positive signal that one of the international media’s most prestigious awards is given to someone who announces to the world spiritual, religious and moral values and speaks forcefully for peace and greater justice," Lombardi added.

Samsung loses Apple iPhone ban case in S Korea

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd lost its case to have certain products by Apple Inc banned in South Korea Thursday when a Seoul court ruled the US manufacturer had not violated Samsung patents.
Samsung in March 2012 filed for damages and a sales ban on some iPhone and iPad models, saying Apple had breached three patents on technology for handling and displaying text and messages from its flagship Galaxy product range.
The Seoul Central District Court said the relevant technology could easily be developed in parallel by another manufacturer, and there was no infringement of intellectual property.
We are disappointed by the court’s decision,” Samsung said. “As Apple has continued to infringe our patented mobile technologies, we will continue to take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights.”
The two smartphone giants have also faced off in the US courts, which have awarded Apple around 930 million dollars, and courts in Germany, Britain and the Netherlands, which have found in favour of Samsung.

Nearly 230 million children under the age of five around the world have never had their birth registered, which often means they will be barred from education, health care and social security, the UN children's agency said.

A report by UNICEF to mark its 67th birthday on December 11 said that globally it amounts to one in three children under five.
Last year, it said, only around 60 percent of all babies born were registered at birth, with the lowest levels of registration in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
UNICEF called for programs to address the reasons families don't register children, including high fees and lack of awareness of laws and procedures.
The 10 countries with the lowest birth registration levels, according to UNICEF, are: Somalia (3 percent), Liberia (4 percent), Ethiopia (7 percent), Zambia (14 percent), Chad and Tanzania (16 percent), Yemen (17 percent), Guinea-Bissau (24 percent), Pakistan (27 percent) and Congo (28 percent).
