V.C. Padmanabhan Memorial Award for ecologist Madhav Gadgil
The V.C. Padmanabhan Memorial Award 2013 for Ecology and
Environment Conservation was presented to eminent ecologist and environmental
scientist Madhav Gadgil in Thrissur.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs1 lakh, a bronze
plaque and a citation.
In his acceptance speech, Gadgil spoke on the theme of
‘Science, Democracy and Environment.’ He questioned the identification of GDP
growth with progress and pointed out that economists too agree that GDP is not
the final word.
According to Gadgil, human progress depends on
improvement in four categories of capital — human, natural, man-made, and
social capital. Sustainable progress, he said, would come by increasing all
four and not just the man-made component which is measured by GDP growth.
