Nikhat bags silver at AIBA Women's World Boxing


Former Junior World Champion Nikhat Zareen (54kg) came one step short of making it two titles in two World Championships in Albena, Bulgaria on Saturday.

The 17-year-old did well to make it to finals of the AIBA Women's Youth World Boxing Championships being held at Bulgaria, but in the end had to settle for a silver medal performance after losing out in the title clash. 

The Andhra boxer has given brilliant account of her boxing skills beating reigning bantam weight Junior World Champion Viktoriya Virt of Ukriane to make to the finals at Albena. In the summit clash, the former Junior National Champion was up against Yunzi Yuan of China. 

The Chinese boxer proved to be stronger of the two on the day. Earlier in the Youth World Championship light weight boxer Simranjit Kaur (60kg) lost out in a close contest against Aidana Arapbayeva from Kazakhstan.

Stephen Lee Banned from Snooker for 12 Years for Match-Fixing Charges

Stephen Lee, a snooker player from England banned for 12 years after being found guilty of seven charges of match-fixing on 25 September 2013. 

Stephen Lee (38) was found guilty of seven match-fixing charges by an independent tribunal and Lee was also ordered to pay 40000 pounds  towards the considerable costs of the investigation and hearing.

The ban will run from 12 October 2013, when an interim suspension was imposed, and means Lee will not be able to compete as a professional snooker player before 12 October 2024, the date of his 50th birthday

Stephen Lee, the former world Number 5, was found guilty of match-fixing charges relating to seven matches in 2008 and 2009.

The matches in question were three in the Malta Cup in 2008, two in the UK Championship in the same year, one in the 2009 China Open and one in the 2009 world championship.

Swaran Singh wins gold at Asian rowing championship

Olympian Swaran Singh Virk led the Indian rowers' impressive showing by clinching a gold medal at the 15th Asian Senior Rowing Championship at Luan, China on Sunday. 

Besides Virk's gold, India won two silver and as many bronze medals in the championship. In the finals that concluded this morning, Virk got the better of rowers from Iran and China in 7:31.88 minutes to bag the yellow metal.

Virk finished at the 16th place after finishing fourth in a minor placings race in the men's single sculls event at the London Olympics.

Virk had booked his berth for the 2012 London Games by winning the major qualifying event at the FISA Olympic Continental Qualification Regatta for Asia in Chung Ju, Korea. 

Rajnath Singh Appointed the BJP Campaign Committee Chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

Rajnath Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party President became the campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls on 29 September 2013 in New Delhi.

He was appointed as the campaign committee chief after the parliamentary board meeting of BJP.

He replaced the Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP- Narendra Modi. Modi was declared as the PM candidate of BJP on 13 September 2013.

He proposed the name of Rajnath Singh for the Election Campaign Committee Chief post.

free public Wi-Fi to offer Cisco and Facebook

Cisco Systems Inc said on Wednesday it was working with Facebook Inc to offer free Wi-Fi Internet access to consumers at public places such as hotels or retail stores using their Facebook log-in

A visitor could check in at a hotel without having to line-up at a front desk by simply signing in via the Facebook application on a smartphone, Cisco said.

Google announced plans to bring free wireless Internet access to 7,000 Starbucks Corp cafes across the United States.

As part of their deal, Google will also help develop a version of the Starbucks Digital Network available to customers, putting it in a strong position to offer targeted advertising and promote the music and other media it sells.

$100 million ADB loan for education sector in Meghalaya

$100 million Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan to improve education and skills in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said the fund will ensure that the state gets the best teachers, best infrastructure and improved skill developments for students.

Union Finance Ministry has given its clearance to the state government's ambitious project in Education which is about Rs 700 crore," Mukul said while addressing thousands of class XII students at a tablet distribution function here.

The project will upgrade to national standards the infrastructure of 117 government-aided private secondary schools and provide laboratories, libraries, clean drinking water, computers, and separate toilets for girls and boys, as well as access for physically-challenged.

Vladimir Putin nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 

Vladimir Putin has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Russian singer and MP Iosif Kobzon also backed the nomination, comparing Putin with Barack Obama, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.

The deadline for 2014 Nobel Peace Prize nominations is in February. The winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 11.

The prize is awarded to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing
