The Annual Meetings are chaired by a Governor of the Bank and the Fund, with the chairmanship rotating among the membership each year. Every two years it elects Executive Directors. Each year any new members are welcomed into the Bank and Fund.

The Inaugural Meeting of the Boards of Governors was held in Savannah, Georgia, USA in March 1946. The first Annual Meetings were held in Washington in 1946.

India asks WB and MDBs to ensure infra dev finance

India has asked World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks to create special windows for ensuring finance for infrastructure development which should include provision to help projects that face a sudden scarcity of funds due to volatile capital flows.

Special windows need to be created in the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) for ensuring finance in support of infrastructure development, including provision of finance for ongoing projects which face a sudden scarcity of funds owing to volatile capital flows," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said during his intervention at the G-20 meeting of finance ministers in Washington on Friday.

The aim of such a provision should be to create mechanisms which can increase the flow of infrastructure financing at times when other investments are slowing down.

Welcoming the proposal to set up a new and dedicated financing facility called the Global Infrastructure Facility at the World Bank to serve the financing needs for infrastructure, particularly in emerging and developing economies, he said.

Google wants people to put their name, photo in ads

Google wants your permission to use your name, photo and product reviews in ads that it sells to businesses.

The internet search giant is changing its terms of service starting November 11.

Google said Friday that the name and photo you use in its social network, Google Plus, is the one that would appear in the ad.

Google has said the social network has 390 million active users per month.

Google's move follows a similar proposal by Facebook. The social network in August said it would show users' faces and names in ads about products they clicked to "like.

That proposal was criticized by privacy groups. They asked the Federal Trade Commission to look into the matter, which the agency said it did as part of routine monitoring of privacy practices.

Google is expected to soon launch the Nexus 5 smartphone and Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system. While most details about the smartphone are already known from leaked photos and rumours, the tech community is largely in the dark about the new features that the upcoming version of Google's mobile OS will bring to the table.

First US Sikh soldier gets corporal rank

Twenty-nine-year-old Delhi-born Simranpreet Lamba, the US army's only enlisted Sikh soldier, has also now become the first of the community to be promoted to the corporal rank in America in three decades.

Corporal is the 5th rank in the US army, above specialist and directly below sergeant.
Later that year, two Sikh officers, a doctor and a dentist, were allowed to serve in the Army while wearing a beard, unshorn hair and a turban, inspiring him to apply to a combative rank profile.

US army policies since 1984 had effectively prevented Sikhs from enlisting in the soldier rank.

He used petroleum jelly to get a grip between his beard and gas mask, and was able to keep his hair clean under all conditions, meeting the military's concerns about training and appearance.

Lamba hopes his story will encourage other Sikhs to serve, even though the path to US military service might not be an easy one for them.

Lamba, who went to the US in 2006 to finish his education, is thrilled. "I'm a proud US army soldier today. There's nothing about my beard and hair that bars me from doing anything any other soldier would do," Lamba told TOI over phone from the US.

After his January 2009 graduation from New York University with a master's degree in industrial engineering, Lamba had decided to stay in the US and started a career in a private sector.

His enlistment in 2009, however, triggered a nine-month review in which army officials pondered over if he could serve while sporting a turban, uncut hair and a beard.
