£75-million grant for Rhodes Scholarships
Prestigious Rhodes ScholarshipsAt the 110th Anniversary of the Scholarships, the 500 scholars who had gathered at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, were pleasantly surprised at the announcement of a £75-million grant by the McCall MacBain Foundation established by John and Marcy McCall MacBain.
It consists of a £25 million grant, a £25 million challenge/match donation, and a future £25 million to expand the Scholarships into new geographie.
Whose alumni constitute Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winners, present and former heads of state, Olympians, judges and eminent academics has received an infusion of funds from a Canadian millionaire and former Rhodes Scholar, the largest grant it has received since its inception in 1903.
TV Narendran appointed new Tata Steel MD for India, South East Asia
Narendran will succeed incumbent H M Nerurkar, who is retiring on October 31 upon attaining the age of superannuation.
The appointment of Narendran, who is in his late 40s, has surprised many as current group CFO Koushik Chatterjee's name was doing the rounds for the top post.
On reaching superannuation on October 31, 2013, HM Nerurkar, MD Tata Steel India and South East Asia will step down from the Board of Tata Steel and will be succeeded by T V Narendran with effect from November 1, 2013," the company said in a statement.
Accordingly, Narendran, Chatterjee and Karl Koehler, who heads Tata Steel Europe, will report to Chairman Cyrus Mistry and the Board from November 1.

According to an announcement by Jonathan Taylor, chair of the Booker Prize, the prize will from 2014 be expanded to include writers in English from any part of the world provided their books have been published in the United Kingdom.
The idea of instituting a separate Booker prize for English fiction for U.S. authors alone was considered but dismissed as it would end up diluting the prestige of the prize.
The decision to open up the Booker was not one that the trustees took “quickly or lightly” Mr. Taylor said. “Over the following 18 months the views of writers, readers, publishers, agents, booksellers and others were canvassed on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.
Pynchon, Lahiri in U.S. National Book Award
Thomas Pynchon, George Saunders and Jhumpa Lahiri are among the finalists on the fiction longlist for the U.S. National Book Awards.
The list features the kind of high-profile choices major publishers have wanted for years.
The lists will be narrowed to five in each category next month. Winners will be announced on November 20, 2013.

Former BCCI secretary Lele passes away
Former secretary of the Indian Cricket Board, Jaywant
Yeshwant Lele passed away at his residence in Vadodara following a massive
heart attack.
He was 75
and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
A qualified umpire and a club level cricketer, Lele
later graduated to BCCI ranks and then rose to become its secretary during one
of the most turbulent period in Indian cricket.
It was during Lele's tenure as the BCCI secretary that
the match-fixing scandal broke out in 2000, which led to the life ban imposed
by the Board on former captain Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Sharma and
five-year bans on Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar.

Mohammedan Sporting create history, win Durand Cup after 73
years
Kolkata giants Mohammedan Sporting today created history
by winning the prestigious Durand Cup Football tournament after a gap of 73
years, defeating ONGC 2-1 in the final in New Delhi.
The century old Kolkata outfit was losing its
significance in the context of Indian club football and this victory will mean
a lot for its thousands of fans spread across the length and breadth of the
country.
Sporting coach Abdul Aziz had to field Tolgay as his
best player Penn Orji was injured and the Aussie striker proved why he is so
highly rated in Indian club circuit.
The last time Mohd Sporting won Durand Cup was before
Independence in 1940 by defeating Warwickshire Regiment.
