Indian-origin scientist chosen for UN's highest environmental award

Indian-origin scientist, who proved how cutting emissions of "black carbon" or soot can significantly lessen the impact of climate change, has been selected for the United Nation's top environmental award.

A statement issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Tuesday said Veerabhadran Ramanathan of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California is to receive the 2013 " Champions of the Earth award", the UN's highest environmental award.

The prize is awarded annually to leaders from government, civil society and the private sector, whose actions have had a significant and positive impact on the environment.

Ramanathan's studies on the climate warming effects of non-CO2 pollutants dates back to 1975, when he discovered the super greenhouse effect of a class of halocarbons known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Translating his research into action, he had started "Project Surya" in India to phase out inefficient cooking stoves.

Govt to infuse Rs 14K cr in PSU banks in next 15 days

The Government will infuse Rs 14,000 crore in public sector banks within next few days, Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Takru said here today.

In the meantime, Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram has said that overtly emphasis should not be laid on the decisions of the Fed in the manner in which the economy will unfold.

Talking to reporters at North Block, Takru said: “14,000-crore infusion will be done in one go. Decision can be taken during the next 10-15 days.

Current non-performing situation does not make us happy but still there is no danger to our banks,’’ he said, while adding that NPA situation will be discussed during the meeting next week.

Twitter in talks to add banks to IPO

Twitter is in talks to add additional banks to its underwriting syndicate for its upcoming initial public offering and in the process of finalizing the fee structure, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Twitter Chief Financial Officer Mike Gupta is leading the microblogging platform's IPO and is in touch with the investment banks about their roles.

PM dedicates Super Thermal Power plant to the nation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that for the rapid economic development of the country, it is mandatory to make sufficient electricity available at an affordable price. Dr Singh said, without power supply no sector can work efficiently, whether it is agriculture or the service sector.

He was addressing a function after dedicating the Seepat Super Thermal Power Plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation, NTPC, in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh today.

In the 11th Plan, the capacity had increased by 55 thousand Megawatt, while in the 12th plan, the capacity targeted has been increased by one lakh 18 thousand Megawatt. 

He said the country is now adopting World Class Super Critical Technology in more and more power plants not only to reduce power generation costs, but also to minimize the adverse effect on the overall environment.

The Seepat Power Plant of the NTPC is the first project of the NTPC using Super Critical Technology. 

This technology is the next generation method of power generation that saves coal and also maintains ecological balance, which will result in affordable electricity to the public.

UAE asks Indian school in Abu Dhabi to shut down

UAE authorities have ordered the closure of a private Indian school in Abu Dhabi,
the Indian Islahi Islamic School — notified parents on September 15 that it has been ordered to close down by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC).

According to a board put up outside the school gates, the date given for the closure is April 1, 2014.

According to Muhsin K, principal at the school, the school currently has 1,310 students.

Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant Appointed New Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court

Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant, Judge of the High Court of Uttarakhand was on 19 September 2013 appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. He was appointed by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant took over from Justice T.Nandakumar Singh, who is the Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High court since March 2013. 

He entered in U.P. Judicial Service in 1976.
He held different posts in judicial service at Ghaziabad, Pilibhit, Ranikhet, Bereilly and in 1990 he appointed as Additional District Judge in district Bahraich of Uttar Pradesh.

Tata Steel names TV Narendran as MD

Tata Steel names TV Narendran as MD which will to assume operations from November 1.

Narendran, 48, is one of the youngest to take over the reins at Tata Steel at a time the steelmaker is setting up a six million tonne plant in Odisha. He is currently Vice President- Safety, Flat Products and Long Products.
