Banking aspirants Shriram Capital,Religare Enterprises stoppage for bank licence

Banking aspirants, including Shriram Capital and Religare Enterprises are running from pillar to post to get clearances from a plethora of bodies such as the Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation, the incometax department, as the Reserve Bank of India accelerates processes to grant new licences by January.

The central bank, which is in a hurry after Raghuram Rajan took charge, has sought details of the ultimate beneficiary shareholders in some of the group companies and more details about finance beyond what appears in annual reports.

The RBI has asked for more information on shareholders, financial results of group companies for last five years and a lot more details on financials," said GS Sundararajan, group director, Shriram Capital. He did not detail the specific questions.

Jayalalithaa launches low-cost mineral water scheme

After low-cost tiffin centres, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday launched a scheme to provide 1 litre mineral water at Rs. 10 a bottle, to ensure quality and affordable drinking water to the poor and middle class.\

She inaugurated the state-run ‘Amma Drinking Water’ plant with a daily capacity of three lakh litres at Gummidipoondy, about 50 km from Chennai, through video conferencing from the Secretariat and launched the sale of the water bottles.

For the first time in India, drinking water plants are being set up by government transport corporations to provide safe drinking water at low cost to the people,” an official release said.

The water will be available in a plastic bottle with the word ‘Amma’ (mother in Tamil), as Ms. Jayalalithaa is addressed by her partymen.

Recently, it had launched ‘Amma Canteens’ that offer breakfast, lunch and dinner at highly subsidised rates.

No change in visa policy for Modi---Marie Harf

The U.S. on Saturday remained non-committal on granting a visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been named the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, saying there was no change in its longstanding visa policy. 

Mr. Modi, denied a visa in 2005 on the ground of alleged human rights violations after the 2002 riots in Gujarat, could apply like any other applicant and have his case reviewed under American laws, said State Department spokesperson Marie Harf. 

She said--
Ms. Harf was asked at a news briefing whether there was a change in U.S. policy after Mr. Modi was named the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

As to the specific case, there’s no change in our longstanding visa policy. 

With regard to the Chief Minister, he is welcome to apply for a visa and await a review like any other applicant. 

Britain has warmed up to Mr. Modi with Opposition Labour party MP Barry Gardiner sending the Gujarat Chief Minister a letter last month inviting him to the House of Commons to speak on “The Future of Modern India.

Kerosene Direct subsidy transfer from next month 

Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao on Sunday said that the direct benefit transfer of subsidy scheme for kerosene will be launched in Mysore and Tumkur districts next month. 

Speaking to presspersons here, he said that a uniform price (Rs. 16.20 a litre) for kerosene had been introduced in the State.

About 30 lakh applications had been received by the department for below poverty line cards. 

The deputy commissioners had been told to verify the applications and finalise the list of eligible beneficiaries. In about two months, the process would be completed, and the BPL cards would be distributed, he said.

JAPAN to be nuclear free as last reactor switched off

Japan is to start the process of switching off its last working nuclear reactor on Sunday for a scheduled inspection with no restart in sight due to public hostility towards atomic power.

The move will leave the world's third largest economy without atomic energy for the second time since the Fukushima crisis erupted in March 2011. 

Kansai Electric Power will gradually take offline the No 4 reactor at its Oi nuclear plant in Fukui prefecture in western Japan. 


It was the first time in more than four decades that Japan was without nuclear power. 

Japan previously was without any nuclear energy in May 2012, when all of the country's 50 commercial reactors had stopped for scheduled checkups, with utilities unable to restart them due to public opposition. 

UN accepts Syria chemical arms treaty application 

United Nations has formally accepted Syria’s application to join the chemical weapons convention, a spokesperson said.

Syria applied on Thursday to join the convention, which bans the production and stockpiling of chemical weapons and orders the destruction of existing stocks. 

But UN lawyers asked the government for information before it could be accepted. 

The Secretary-General, in his capacity as the depositary of the 1992 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, on Saturday received the formal instrument of accession to the Convention by Syria, the UN spokesperson said.
