Angela Merkel is heading for a third term as Germany’s
chancellor, as exit polls showed she could even be on course for the historic
achievement of an absolute majority in the country’s parliament.
An early projection by the state broadcaster ARD on
Sunday evening showed Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democrat party (CDU) winning 301
seats in the 598-seat Bundestag, enough to form a government without a
coalition partner.
It had been expected that Mrs Merkel would be forced
into a “grand coalition” with her main socialist opponents, the Social
Democrats. The early results suggested that she might avoid this.
Ms. Merkel’s first 2005-09 chancellorship was a grand
coalition with the SPD, which scored its second-worst result since World War II
on Sunday, with 25.7 per cent.

In September 4, RBI had announced a swap window to
attract FCNR (B) dollar funds.
RBI has been receiving requests from banks to
consider a special concessional window for swapping FCNR (B) deposits that
would be mobilised according to the recent relaxations permitted by RBI.
Accordingly, it has been decided to offer such a window to banks to swap fresh FCNR (B) dollar funds, mobilised for a tenure of at least three years, at a fixed rate of 3.5% a year for the tenure of the deposit
Japan's Murakami favourite for Nobel prize again
Japanese literary Haruki Murakami is favourite for this year's Nobel Prize in Literature, is known for writing lyrically and surreally about Japanese who refuse to toe the line in a homogenous society, peppering his works with pop culture references, novelist scooping up the prize, which will be announced in Sweden next month.
His three-volume novel "1Q84" proved a worldwide phenomenon, and non-Japanese-speaking fans are now eagerly waiting for translation of his latest -- "Shikisai wo Motanai Tazaki Tsukuru to Kare no Junrei no Toshi (Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage)" -- expected next year.
Murakami's latest novel tells the story of a young man struggling with an ordeal in his past, who uses the support offered by a romance to get back on his feet.
Translated into some 40 languages, his works have attracted fans globally with their so-called "Murakami world" -- fantastical scenes such as a giant frog inviting a salaryman into an epic battle, or skies that rain mackerel.
Indian origin Scientists discover ‘blueprint’ for first universal flu vaccine
A team led by professor Ajit Lalvani from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London has used a 2009 pandemic virus strain to study why some people seem to resist severe illness, thereby stumbling upon a recipe to create the world's first universal flu vaccine.
Lavani asked volunteers to donate blood samples just as the swine flu pandemic was getting under way and report any symptoms they experienced over the next two flu seasons.
The scientists found those who avoided severe illness had more CD8 T cells, a type of virus-killing immune cell, in their blood at the start of the pandemic.
They believe a vaccine that stimulates the body to produce more of these cells could be effective at preventing flu viruses, including new strains that cross into humans from birds and pigs, from causing serious disease.
Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP-2013)
Deputy Director General of Russian defence export agency Rosoboronexport Victor M. Komardin said—
India’s marked emphasis on self-reliance in defence as enunciated in the latest edition of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP-2013) will not hamper the long-standing defence ties with Russia.
On India’s upcoming bid for the second line of conventional submarines under Project 75-I, he said Russia was in a position to ensure fast delivery of its Amur-class, if bought off-the-shelf.
If you wanted to integrate something like the BrahMos cruise missile or the underdevelopment air independent propulsion, it was also possible.
It would then take time to get operational. It was for the Indian side to take a call on this, he said.

BlackBerry to be acquired by Prem Watsa-led Fairfax group in $4.7 billion deal
Tech pioneer BlackBerry made a last roll of the dice on Monday and agreed to a probable $4.7 billion buyout by a consortium planning to take the struggling smartphone maker private.
BlackBerry was once a leader in mobile tech but has been squeezed by rivals Android and Apple, which coincidentally announced record sales of its latest iPhone on Monday.
Fairfax, a Canadian firm headed by billionaire Prem Watsa, is already BlackBerry's largest shareholder with approximately 10 percent of its shares.
According to International Data Corporation, BlackBerry's global market share had slipped to 3.7 percent in the second quarter, the lowest since tracking began.
Android accounts for nearly 80 percent.
The company, formerly known as Research In Motion, unveiled a new corporate name and a new platform in January as it sought to regain momentum, but its most recent numbers suggest this has been a spectacular failure.
