Moody’s cuts 2013-14 GDP growth forecast to 4.5%

Moody’s has lowered its outlook for India's GDP growth to 4.5 per cent for 2013-14 from 5.5 per cent.

This reflects the recent depreciation of the rupee, which will exacerbate inflationary pressures, keep domestic interest rates relatively high, and hinder a recovery in domestic demand growth.

US to give $23.5 million to Pak security system

US today said it would provide $ 23.5 million to Pakistan for building law enforcement capability' fighting illicit narcotics' and reforming the country's criminal justice system.

Economic Affairs Secretary Nargis Sethi and US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson signed a bilateral assistance agreement in this regard here today. 

Speaking on the occasion' Olson praised Pakistan's achievements in the field of narcotics control and said these include a significant reduction in domestic poppy cultivation and improved capacity for Pakistan's civilian police to manage mass demonstrations


Joint military exercises between India & Nepal starts in U’khand 

Joint military exercises in general combat and mountain warfare between India and Nepal began in Pithoragarh today in Uttrakhand .

The exercise includes anti-insurgency operations in hilly terrains and relief and rescue operations at the time of natural disasters.

According to official sources the military exercise will conclude on October 6. Over 900 Indian and Nepali troops are taking part in this exercise being conducted in mountainous terrains of the area shared by the geography of both the countries in this two weeks long 5th Indo-Nepal war games.

The joint military exercises between Indian and Nepal began at platoon level, which has now reached at company level.

Amazon.com Inc unveiled two new high-definition tablets on Tuesday with a unique on-screen helpdesk feature it hopes will give it an advantage over devices from rivals Apple Inc and Google Inc.

Kindle Fire HDX tablets feature what Amazon has called the 'Mayday Button', which instantly brings up a video chat with a tech-support representative who can tell a user how to operate the device or even do it for them remotely.

Kindle Fire HDX tablet starts at $229 and the bigger tablet starts at $379, both for 16GB wifi-only models.

If you compare with apple--Apple's 16GB wifi iPad mini starts at $329, and its 16GB full-sized wifi iPad starts at $499.

PV Sindhu finally receives Arjuna award

Rising shuttler P V Sindhu was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award by Sports Minister Jitendra Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday. 

Sindhu had missed the opportunity to receive the award from President Pranab Mukhejee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 31 as she was busy playing in the final of the Indian Badminton league (IBL).

Jitendra Singh today presented the shuttler with a statuette, citation and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh during the governing body meeting of Sports Authority of India.

Sindhu also won her maiden Grand Prix Gold title when she bagged the women`s singles trophy in the USD 120,000 Malaysia Open badminton in Kuala Lumpur in May.


18-year-old Sindhu became the first Indian woman shuttler to clinch a bronze medal at the World Championships last month.

Bunker Roy and Malala Yousafzai to receive top US award 

India environmentalist Bunker Roy and Pakistan's teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai were declared winners of this year's of the prestigious 'Clinton Global Citizens Awards'. 

Roy is the founder of the Barefoot College, which has been providing solutions to problems in rural communities for more than 40 years. 

As a result of Barefoot's work, one million litres of rainwater have been harvested to provide clean drinking water to over 239,000 school children in more than 1,300 communities worldwide. 

Roy has been named one of the 50 environmentalists who could save the planet by the Guardian and one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. 

The awards will be presented in a special ceremony tomorrow during the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City, where more than 1,000 top business, government, and civil society leaders will convene to address some of the world's most pressing challenges.

The Clinton Global Citizen Awards were launched in 2007 to honour outstanding individuals for their visionary leadership, demonstrated impact, and sustainable and scalable work in solving global issues.

Oracle offers 10 new cloud services

Oracle has launched 10 new cloud services, as well as a cloud marketplace, in a push towards offering as a service, Java in the cloud, and business intelligence (BI) in the cloud.

India's TCS, GE launch female BPO centre in Saudi Arabia

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in partnership with GE and Saudi Aramco Tuesday launched first all-female business process outsourcing (BPO) centre in Saudi Arabia that will create nearly 3,000 jobs in the Gulf kingdom.

The centre, in Dhahran, headquarters of Saudi Aramco, will be staffed by Saudi women with TCS and GE owning 76 percent and 24 percent equity respectively in the new venture, which will initially serve Saudi Aramco and GE as anchor clients.

The collaboration of the three companies underscores their strong commitment to support Saudi Arabia’s localisation strategies to diversify the Kingdom’s economy and enable the growth of a viable employment sector, TCS said in a statement.

The centre brings a unique business model to Saudi Arabia, and is set to become a rich training ground for building new capabilities, skills and careers for Saudi females.

 It employ skilled graduates in the areas of finance, accounting, human resources management and supply chain management services.

 Besides, Mistry, TCS managing director N Chandrasekaran, Saudi Aramco president Khalid al Falih, and GE chairman Jeffrey Immelt were also present at the event. 

Governor of Saudi Arabia General Investment Authority Abdullatif A. Al-Othman was the chief guest at the launch ceremony.

Parle Agro India’s first coffee carbonated drink

the country's first coffee-flavoured carbonated beverage available in 250 ml cans priced Rs 20, was recently test-marketed in big cities and is now being taken to smaller towns and rural markets.

The maker of juices and fruit drinks such as Frooti, Appy and Hippo expects the new coffee drink to record Rs 1,000-crore sales in the first 12-18 months of its launch.

Unemployment rate among SC, OBC highest in Chandigarh

latest labour survey-- the unemployment rate per 1000 persons (age group 15 years and above) among SC population was highest in UT Chandigarh at 151, followed by Jammu and Kashmir (132), Delhi was found at 82, followed by Punjab (55), Haryana (42) and Himachal Pradesh (36).

In case of OBC population also, UT Chandigarh had the highest unemployment rate of 124, followed by HP (97), Delhi (78), Haryana (52), Punjab (38) and J&K (32)
Unemployment among young generation (age-group 15 to 29 years) in northern region was maximum in Jammu and Kashmir at 241, followed by HP (177), Delhi (159), UT Chandigarh (136), Punjab (135) and Haryana (123).

Unemployment rate in general category was found to be highest in J&K at 100, followed by HP (69), Haryana (50), Punjab (48), Delhi (43) and UT Chandigarh (40).

unemployment rate among Scheduled Castes and OBCs in northern states was found to be the highest in Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Overall unemployment rate was, however, the highest in Jammu and Kashmir, the Annual Employment and Unemployment Survey report for 2012-13 released by Labour Bureau under Union Ministry of Labour and Employment found.
