The Indian Census is a credible source of statistical information on different characteristics of the citizens since 1872. This was conducted at different points of time in different parts of the country. In 1881 a Census was taken for the entire country simultaneously. Since then, Census has been conducted every ten years, without a break.

The Census provides a snapshot of the country's population and housing at a given point of time. The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is the nodal authority for conducting decennial Census in the country. Census 2011 is the 15th National Census of the country since 1872 and the 7th after Independence.

The second phase of Census 2011 began on February 11, 2011, with the enumeration of the First Citizen, the President of India, Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan by a team of Census functionaries led by Census Commissioner of India, Dr. C. Chandramouli.

The second phase called the Population Enumeration is being conducted simultaneously all over the country from February 9 to 28, 2011.

The first phase of the Census, called the Houselisting and Housing Census, was completed in April–September 2010.

The population of the country as per the provisional figures of Census 2011 is 1210.19 million of which 623.7 million (51.54%) are males and 586.46 million (48.46%) are females.

The provisional figures of Census 2011 were released in New Delhi on Thursday by Union home secretary Shri G.K.Pillai and RGI Shri C Chandramouli.
