Winners Of World Badminton Championship 2013

Women’s Singles :- Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon won the women’s singles title ,after defeated Li Xuerui (China) in the final at the World Badminton Championships at Guangzhou.This is the first time any shuttler from Thailand has won a gold at the Worlds in any category.

Men’s Singles :- China’s Lin Dan reinforced his claim to being the greatest badminton player in history after he defeated arch rival Malaysian Lee Chong Wei in the World Championship final to become the first man to win five world singles titles.

Women’s Doubles :- China’s top seeds Xiaoli Wang and Yang Yu won the women’s doubles title after defeated South Korea’s Hye Won Eom and Ye Na Jang in the final.

Men’s Doubles :- Hendra Setiawan and Muhammad Ahsan ( Indonesia ) won the title ,after defeated Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen (Denmark) in the final.


Mixed Doubles :- Tontowi Ahmad and Lilyana Natsir (Indonesia) won the title ,after defeated Xu Chen and Ma Jin (China) in the final.

Reliance General announces insurance schemes for agriculture sector

The insurance arm of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group has announced its entry into India's agriculture insurance business, saying it would offer farmers insurance cover for their crops against adverse weather conditions.

Reliance General Insurance announced various insurance products, some of which weather-based insurance schemes while other are yield-based.

Rakesh Jain, chief executive of Reliance General Insurance, also noted that it was the company's first step into the country's agriculture insurance sector.

Announcing the move, Mr. Jain said, "It is our first step in the domestic agriculture insurance sector with weather and yield-based crop insurance products, which are aimed at providing protection to farmers from the problems arising due to the vagaries of weather."

Reliance General launched the agriculture insurance schemes after the government asked private sector insurers to implement weather-based crop insurance schemes for farmers.

The private sector insurer added that it was hopeful that its agriculture insurance products would help farmers get rid of the constant worry about the future of their crops.

Pakistani, Bangladeshi origin people won't be given overseas Indian card

Citizenship Act, the government has decided that any person who is or had been a citizen of Pakistan and Bangladesh would not be eligible for registration as an overseas Indian cardholder.

The cardholders will also not be entitled to be registered as voters and cannot become members of the legislature anywhere in India.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2011, which was passed by the Parliament last week, provides for registration as an overseas Indian cardholder if the person is a citizen of another country but was a citizen of India at the time or at anytime after the commencement of the Constitution.

A citizen of another country eligible to become a citizen of India at the commencement of the Constitution, citizen of another country but who belonged to a territory that became part of India after August 15, 1947 will also be eligible for registration as an overseas Indian cardholder.

It also provides for registration of a spouse of an Indian citizen, who is the citizen of another country and whose marriage is also registered abroad.

Ratan Thiyam Appointed Chairperson of National School of Drama

Shri Ratan Thiyam has been appointed as the Chairperson of the NationalSchool of Drama Society.

The President of India has appointed Shri Thiyam for a period of four years as per the relevant Rules and Regulations of the Society.

Also known as Thiyam Nemai, Ratan Thiyam is known for writing and staging plays that use ancient Indian theater traditions and forms in a contemporary context

He is also the founder-director of ‘Chorus Repertory Theatre’, formed on the outskirts of Imphal, Manipur in 1976.

He was awarded the 2012 Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour in the performing arts conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’sNational Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.

He served as the director of NSD in 1987-88.

Former Nepal Prime Minister Man Singh Shrestha Died

Former Nepalese Prime Minister Marich Man Singh Shrestha has died in Kathmandu on 15 August.He had served as Nepal’s Prime Minister for about four years till April 1990, when the political parties launched an agitation to restore democratic rights.

India & Bangladesh sign MOU to enhance cooperation in textiles sector

India and Bangladesh today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further enhance cooperation in the textiles sector.

The pact was signed at the end of delegation level talks between Textiles Minister K.S.Rao and his visiting Bangladesh counterpart Abdul Latif Siddique. 

Under the MoU signed, India has offered cotton security for Bangladesh Mills. 

Both countries also agreed to set up a successor organisation for the International Jute Study Group in Dhaka through joint efforts at the UNCTAD. 

India have also assured Bangladesh that its Textiles mills will not have any difficulties in sourcing cotton from India.


India and Bangladesh account for 50 billion dollars of textiles and apparel exports to the world. The two countries also account for 90 per cent global production of jute and allied fibres.

Canadian Street Named After Mahatma Gandhi

A street in Canada’s Winnipeg city has been named after Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of India’s 67th Independence Day on 15 August. 

The street leading to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will now be known as ” Honorary Mahatma Gandhi Way” . 

At a ceremony , the Mayor of Winnipeg Sam Katz explained that the street was named so after an individual who is synonymous with the struggle for human rights.
