India’s most celebrated writers
His famous Novel—
In his lifetime he wrote 11 novels and many hundred short
stories. So it certainly isn’t a case of low volume and thus being a speck of
shine in a sky full of literary stars.
‘Sadgati’ (Salvation), his short story later filmed by
Satyajit Ray, is a story about how a lower caste untouchable man dies of
exhaustion trying to chop wood for a high caste pujari for a petty favour.
He
is then dragged off like a dead dog with a rope around his ankle. It is an apt
example of how he could be raw, not merely realist, in his honest portrayals of
the brutal socio-political reality of his times.
Yet others were ones of great personal tragedy — for example
that of Nirmala (The Unblemished One) the young woman forced to marry a very
old man who has sons older than her from his first marriage.
The husband is
cruelly jealous and suspects Nirmala of having an affair with his eldest son
when Nirmala is only doing the duty of a mother to a son who is ill. The son
finally dies taking Nirmala’s crushed soul with him.
Jadeja first Indian after Kumble to top ODI bowlers’ list
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja on Sunday became the first
Indian bowler to top the bowlers’ chart in the latest ICC ODI Player Rankings
after former captain Anil Kumble claimed the pole position way back in 1996.
Kumble had topped the table for 11 matches in
November-December 1996. Overall, Jadeja is the fourth India bowler after Kapil
Dev (March 1989), Maninder Singh (December 1987-November 1988) and Kumble to
claim the number-one spot in ODIs.
The India team, meanwhile, consolidated its position as
number one team in ICC ODI rankings. A 5-0 series win over Zimbabwe has helped
it strengthen its position at the top.
Suresh Raina in 17th and Shikhar Dhawan in 23rd (up by 16)
have made progress in the list, which is still headed by South Africa’s Hashim
Amla.
Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara has achieved a career-best
rating of 829 points and has equalled his best-ever ranking of third after
finishing as the highest run-getter in the ODI series against South Africa.

Nasa Curiosity rover approaches first anniversary on Mars
Nasa's Curiosity rover will mark one year on Mars next
week and has already achieved its main goal of revealing that ancient Red
planet could have supported life, the US space agency said.
After its successful landing in a crater on the red planet
on August 6, 2012, Curiosity has provided more than 190 gigabits of data,
returned more than 36,700 full images and 35,000 thumbnail images, and fired
more than 75,000 laser shots to investigate the composition of targets.
The
mission measured natural radiation levels on the trip to Mars and is monitoring
radiation and weather on the surface of Mars, which will be helpful for
designing future human missions to the planet, researchers said.
The Curiosity mission also found evidence Mars lost most of its original atmosphere through processes that occurred at the top of the atmosphere.
