Bharti Airtel appoints Christian de Faria as new CEO of Africa
Bharti Airtel has named Christian de Faria as the new head of its Africa operations effective January 1, 2014, as the world's fourth-largest mobile phone company.
Faria will join Airtel Africa on September 16 as chief of the company's English-speaking markets, which comprises nine of the continent's 17 countries, or the Anglophone region, before taking overall charge.
"As CEO - Airtel Africa, Christian will be responsible for providing overall leadership for the African operations and will be fully empowered to manage its P&L," India's largest mobile phone operator said.
Bharti Airtel entered Africa in 2010 by buying Zain Telecom's African operations. Airtel Africa is the third-biggest operator in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, with 21.6 million customers as of June. The company is the second-largest operator in Kenya, behind Safaricom, a unit of Vodafone.
Sania Mirza - Jie Zheng pair won WTA New Haven Open Title
Third seeded Sania and Jie defeated the second-seeded pair of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 6-4 in the summit clash.
This is Sania Mirza's 17th WTA doubles title and the third Title in 2013 and Jie Zheng's 15th WTA doubles title and the first in last two years.

India's first UK-listed feeder fund by September that would raise dollars from overseas investors and plough it into infrastructure debt funds (IDFs) in the country.
India is eyeing several measures to boost long-term stable capital flows in to the country to finance its current account deficit that it hope to contain below $70 billion (3.7% of GDP) in 2013-14.
The ministry feels this can help catalyze foreign capital flows into various infrastructure sectors projects that the government has been clearing in a bid to revive investments.Projects worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore were cleared by the cabinet committee on investments in its last meet on Monday.
P Chidambaram had in May, during his UK visit, said that the government was exploring the possibility of a feeder fund for IDFs The government has already announced a slew of measures including bond issuance by state run companies, relaxation in external commercial borrowing norms and more attractive deposit scheme for non-resident Indians to boost capital flows.
The rupee has declined by over 20% against the dollar since April over fears of the US Federal Reserve tapering its $85 billion monthly monetary stimulus from September as the world's largest economy recovers.
Ashok Vemuri quits Infosys
Mr. Vemuri’s resignation comes days after Infosys Senior Vice-President Sudhir Chaturvedi put in his papers, and a month after Global Sales Head Basab Pradhan quit the company.
Mr. Vemuri is rumoured to join iGATE, according to industry insiders. However, this could not be independently verified by The Hindu.

Deepak Sandhu tipped to be next CIC (Chief Information Commissioner)
Former media adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Deepak Sandhu, is likely to be appointed as next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) to succeed Satyanand Mishra who retires early next month.
The Chief Information Commissioner is appointed by the President on the recommendation of a committee led by the Prime Minister and including the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the PM.
Ms. Sandhu’s appointment is understood to have been cleared at a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the file recommending her name has been sent to the President’s office for his approval.
Ms. Sandhu, a retired Indian Information Service (IIS) officer of 1971 batch, has already been serving in Central Information Commission as Information Commissioner since September 2009.
if appointed, will have a tenure till December 19 this year.
According to rules, a Chief Information Commissioner gets a term of five years from the date on which he or she enters upon the office or till he attained the age of sixty-five years.
Previous Satyanand Mishra is due to complete his term as CIC on September 5.
Iran’s parliament approves bill to sue US over 1953 coup
Iran’s parliament gave preliminary approval on Wednesday to a bill requiring the government to sue the U.S. for its involvement in the 1953 coup that overthrew the country’s democratically elected Prime Minister.
The bill follows the release of newly declassified documents offering more details of how the CIA orchestrated the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh 60 years ago.
Of 196 lawmakers attending the session of parliament, 167 voted in favor of the bill while five opposed it. The session was broadcast live on state radio.
The U.S. cut off diplomatic relations with Iran after militant students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran to protest Washington’s refusal to hand over the toppled shah back to Iran for trial.

Indra Nooyi to be honoured by Indian-American women
professionals
PepsiCo’s
Chairperson and CEO Indra Nooyi, who is of Indian origin, would be honoured by
a charitable body, run by a group of Indian-American women professionals in
Manhattan, in October.
A statement from the US-based NGO – Children’s Hope
India (CHI) today said Nooyi would be felicitated with the Special Impact Award
at their annual gala to be held at Pier Sixty in Manhattan on October 13.
Born in Chennai, Nooyi had studied business management
from the premier Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.
Founded in 1992 by a group of Indian American women
professionals, CHI sponsors health, education and vocational programmes for
thousands of children in India.
In addition to Nooyi’s award, CHI will also honour human
rights activist Mallika Dutt, who founded the human rights group
‘Breakthrough’, with the ‘Making a Difference’ Award.
EDUSAT programme for government colleges
State government, on Wednesday, launched EDUSAT programme aimed at bridging the gap in teaching infrastructure between rural and urban students.
The programme, through which students in government first grade colleges and government engineering and government polytechnic colleges will benefit, is being delivered with assistance from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).
Launching the programme, Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande said that the programme will be implemented in three days in 130 government first grade colleges and 32 government polytechnics in the first phase.
It will be extended to the remaining colleges within the next three months.

India’s first defence satellite GSAT-7 all set for
launch
India’s maritime security will get a fresh impetus as the
stage is now set for the launch of an exclusive home-built satellite for the
Navy by European space consortium Arianespace from Kourou spaceport in French
Guiana on Friday.
GSAT-7 is India’s first dedicated spacecraft for Defence
applications.

The Rs 185 crore state-of-the-art satellite carries
payloads operating in UHF, S, C and Ku bands.

440 Newton Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) and thrusters.
GSAT-7 is scheduled to be launched into a Geosynchronous
Transfer Orbit (GTO) by Ariane-5 VA 215 during the 50-minute launch window
starting from 2 am on Friday.
The launch cost for ISRO is around Rs 470 crore,
including insurance. ISRO cannot launch heavy satellites like GSAT-7 as its
home-grown GSLV rocket, with indigenous cryogenic stage, is still at works and
needs two successful flights before it is declared operational.

China to launch 3rd lunar mission this year
China has begun the countdown for its third lunar mission
later this year, during which it plans to land an orbiter on the moon’s
surface.
The Chang’e-3 probe is scheduled to be sent into space
at the end of this year for its lunar landing mission, the State Administration
of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence announced today.
Chang’e-3 has officially entered its launch
implementation stage following its research and construction period,” an
official statement said.
Earlier, China had planned to land a rover on the moon
in its third mission in 2013 and to retrieve it in 2017 after surveying the
lunar surface.
China launched the Chang’e-1 orbiter in 2007 and
Chang’e-2 in 2010.

Punjab to launch ‘bed and breakfast’ scheme for
tourists
To give a boost to tourism and provide a home-like affordable
accommodation to visitors, the Punjab government is set to promote high-end
‘bed and breakfast’ scheme.
The scheme will be managed by Punjab Heritage and
Tourism Promotion Board. The guidelines for the launch of the scheme have been
formed, an official spokesman said here today.
The initiative is to provide a clean and comfortable
place for overseas and domestic tourists along with an opportunity for them to
stay with an Indian, particularly a Punjabi family and experience the
traditions, culture and cuisine of the state, he said.
The first phase of ‘bed and breakfast’ scheme would be
launched in the urban areas of Amritsar, Patiala and Mohali and would be
expanded to other towns of the state in due course, the spokesman said.
It would be useful source of additional income for those
who have necessary aptitude and adequate living area as per the requisite
standards, he said.

DHRUVA-3 inauguration
DHRUVA-3, a high performance computing system developed
by Indian defence scientists will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for
Defence Jitendra Singh on Monday.
The Minster will also inaugurate the silver jubilee
celebrations of the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), the premier missile
development laboratory in Hyderabad along with former President A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam and Andhra Pradesh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan.
DHRUVA-3, developed by ANURAG, one of the labs under
the Defence Research and Development Organisation, will be useful in
computational fluid dynamics design for aircraft and air-borne systems,
simulation of complex systems and stress analysis of materials.
ANURAG is involved in the design and development of
indigenized systems and products to solve and compute complex mission related
applications.
The Minister will also inaugurate a Gallery at “Vigyana
Kancha” in RCI (Research Centre Imarat).
The Governor of Andhra Pradesh will release a souvenir
followed by the release of a video marking RCI’s twenty five years by the
former President of India.
35,473 armed central cops take VRS in 2 years
35513 personnel of the central armed police forces comprising central reserve police force, border security force, central industrial security force, Indo-Tibetan border police, SSB and Assam rifles have opted for voluntary retirement in last two years for personal and domestic reasons.
Highest number of personnel to seek VRS are from BSF (15990), followed by CRPF (11406), CISF (3225), AR (2198), ITBP (1333) and SSB (1321).
The numbers work out to around 50 VRS a day and the total number over two years is a little less than 5% of the combined strength of these forces, which is around 7.5 lakh.
