First child born through revolutionary IVF technique

A baby boy has been born to a couple in the USA through IVF that involves the use of a new embryo screening approach that screens large tracts of DNA for bad chromosomes that would prevent the embryo from implanting successfully into the mother's womb.

Dr Dagan Wells of Oxford University led the international team which has shown how 'next-generation sequencing' can be used to pick the embryos created by IVF that are most likely to lead to successful pregnancies.

IVF technique, that allows doctors to look at the DNA for chromosome defects, has delivered its first successful birth.
