Historic abortion bill passed in Ireland; MPs vote 127 to 31 in favour

Ireland's Parliament has passed the historic and ground breaking pro-abortion bill.

After 48 hours of negotiations, Irish MPs who spent all of Thursday and Friday night jostling over the highly controversial legislation finally pushed through the Protection of Life in Pregnancy Bill.
The bill allows abortions only when a pregnant woman's life is under threat due to the pregnancy or if she is suicidal. An inquest was told that Savita was denied abortion twice because Ireland "is a catholic country."
It has been 21 years since a judgement was passed in 1992 by the Supreme Court in Dublin - is now famously known as case X, which said abortion should be allowed if there was a threat to the mother's life, including suicide.

Luxembourg PM to step down over spy scandal

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, Europe's longest-serving leader, said on Thursday, that he would step down over a scandal involving the secret services, who allegedly indulged in a spate of misconduct on his watch

After his junior coalition partner, the Socialists, put down a motion calling for the dissolution of parliament and early elections, Juncker said he would hand in his resignation to the head of state tomorrow morning after a cabinet meeting.

He is best known in Europe for a tumultuous eight-year stint as head of the eurozone finance ministers group, which ended in January.

In a rare political drama in tiny uneventful Luxembourg, the parliament examined a report alleging that the country's SREL secret service, which the premier is supposed to oversee, had indulged in a series of misdemeanours from 2003 to 2009 that included illegal phone-taps, corruption, and even a dodgy car dealership.

The intelligence service was not my top priority," Juncker told parliament earlier Wednesday.

Moreover I hope Luxembourg will never have a prime minister who sees SREL as (his or her) priority.

New Bhutan govt has to win India's trust

Ex-PM Jigmi Y Thinley's critics in Bhutan and India claimed that the first strain in bilateral ties appeared over the way he described his meeting with then Chinese premier Wen Jiabao in 2012.

They alleged that although the meeting was "pre-arranged" , Thimphu projected it as "an impromptu interaction".

They were of the view that such "distortion" of facts made New Delhi suspicious of Thimphu's intentions. Irrespective of the results in Saturday's election, the new Bhutan government will have to go the extra mile to end suspicion and distrust that cloud its relationship with India.

Bhutan follows a bi-party system. In the primary round that was held weeks ago to choose the top two parties for Saturday's polls, DPT won in 33 and PDP 12.

The remaining two seats went to Druk Nyamdrup Tshogpa that merged with the PDP.

World Population Day

World Population Day that seeks to raise awareness about global population issues, is an annual event observed on 11th July.

The theme for 2013 is Adolescent pregnancy with an aspiration of safe childbirth and that each pregnancy is wanted.

Around 16 million girls under the age of 18 years give birth annually and several undergo abortions. Young mothers face an increased risk of health complications, disability and violation of rights.

It was inspired by the Five Billion Day on 11th July, 1999- approximately the date on which the world’s population reached five billion people.
