T.S. Narasimhan, producer of Malgudi Days passed away

Noted producer T.S. Narasimhan, who filled life to the fictional Malgudi created by novelist R.K. Narayan through “Malgudi Days”, directed by Shankar Nag, died .

He was 86 and is survived by three children.

Besides producing Malgudi Days, Narasimhan produced few children’s films and feature films and was also instrumental in taking Kannada film to national and international level.

Narasimhan who worked for some time in Department of Telecommunication left and entered the film industry.

He produced Kesarina Kamala, directed by R.N. Jayagopal, which delineates on the plight of a sex worker back in 1973.

Shrungar Nagaraj (producer of Pushpaka Vimana, who died recently) was in the lead role along with Kalpana in the film.

R.K. Narayan’s illustrated brother R.K. Lakshman sketched the characters for titles.

Thirty-nine episodes of Malgudi Days were telecast on Doordarshan.

Subsequently, it was re-telecast on Doordarshan and various entertainment channels.

This television series was shot entirely near Agumbe in Shimoga District.

Bankers urge RBI to be cautious in granting new licences

India Inc has doubts about new bank licences being issued during the tenure of this govt, with RBI governor D Subbarao's term expiring in September.

Two top bankers leading separate industry chambers have also urged RBI to exercise extremely high due diligence before short listing possible contenders from the 26 entities that have applied for a licence and ensure that the banking business is the main bread-earner for the entities involved and not one of their many business interests.

Yes Bank founder, CEO and managing director Rana Kapoor said

The  RBI needs to evaluate the 26 applicants through an independent panel to ensure there are no contentious outcomes and must pick a mix of licencees that bring different strengths and innovations to India's unbanked masses.

HSBC India head Naina Lal Kidwai said

This government would like to issue the licences, but the window of opportunity to issue the licences is very small.The problem will be within RBI... as I doubt anyone will sign off on new licences in the last days before their retirement.

DoT to issue Rs 100-crore notices to Vodafone

After levying a demand notice of Rs 650 crore on Bharti Airtel, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to issue two notices totaling Rs 100 crore on Vodafone for allowing its subscribers a local dialing facility which helped them bypass roaming charges in two service areas between 2003 and 2005


"It was emphasised that such type of service violates the national routing and numbering plan, and in an unauthorised fashion, bypasses the national long distance traffic. I

n spite of the DoT instructions on June 20, 2003, the company hadn't stopped the unauthorised service it was providing in the name of direct connect or optimal routing and continued to provide it till 2005. 

It was brought to the notice of DoT through a reference from the PMO in 2005," department of telecom has said, while deciding to impose the demand notice on the service provider.

John Isner wins Atlanta Open

John Isner won the Atlanta Open on Sunday, beating second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) in the tallest final in ATP history.

Isner earned $98,700, and Anderson took home $52,000.

Pakistan Vs West Indies, pockets T20 series 2-0, Pakistan wins

Pakistan’s spinners restricted the world champion West Indies in an 11—run victory in the second Twenty20 international, clinching the two—match series 2—0.

Akmal anchored Pakistan to 135—7, and West Indies could not recover from the loss of four early wickets to be restricted to 124—9.
