ZTE launches six smartphones

Chinese telecom equipment provider ZTE launched six smartphones priced between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 15,000 on Friday.

The company launched  ZTE Blade G2 priced at Rs. 11,599, ZTE Blade C (Dual SIM – 3G) priced at Rs. 7,599, ZTE Blade L priced at Rs. 12599, ZTE Kis Flex (Dual SIM) priced at Rs. 5,799 and ZTE Blade E priced at Rs. 11,999.

The most expensive of them is the ZTE Grand X with a price tag of Rs. 14,999. The device with 5 inch HD display is powered by by a 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor. 
It comes with 512 MB RAM, 1 GB DDR SDRAM and 4 GB of internal memory. 

The 5 inch display of Grand X has a resolution of 5 + 0.3 Mega pixels dual Camera.

Additional charge of Manipur to Nagaland Governor

President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Nagaland Governor Dr. Ashwani kumar as Governor of Manipur, (with additional charge) when the incumbent, Gurbachan Jagat, Governor of Manipur, completes his tenure.

The Nagaland Governor will discharge the functions of the Governor of Manipur until regular arrangements are made.

Lyricist Vaali Died

Acclaimed Tamil lyricist Vaali was cremated on Friday at the Besant Nagar crematorium in Chennai.
He died with respiratory problems. He was 82.

He is survived by his son Balaji.
After years of struggle, he wrote his first song in 1958 in the film “Azhagarmalai Kallan”, but it was the song “Odivadhu Pol Idai Irukkum” from the film “Idaythil Nee” that gave him much needed recognition.

Since then, he went on to pen the lyrics for over 10,000 songs in a career spanning over five decades.

He selectively played few roles in Tamil films such as “Sathya”, “Hey Ram” and “Parthale Paravasam”.

A prolific writer, Vaali had written an autobiography titled “Naanum Indha Nootrandum

Former Union Minister Khurshed Alam Khan dead

Khurshed Alam Khan, a former Union Minister and father of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, died on Saturday at the age of 95.  

Khan, who had served as Minister of State under the late Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, was admitted to a private hospital in New Delhi six days ago after he complained of chest pain.

Khan, who was in a major way responsible for creation of the Jamia Milia Islamia as an independent university through a Parliamentary law, had served as Chancellor of the university.

Born in Pitaura village in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh, he had represented Farrukhabad in Lok Sabha between 1984 and 1989.

HDFC to purchase iconic Hindustan Unilever ex-headquarter

Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) has said it will buy Hindustan Unilever's (HUL) erstwhile headquarters at Backbay Reclamation in Churchgate.

Earlier in April, the housing finance giant had entered into a lease agreement for the property.

HDFC began its operations in a modest office in Ramon House in 1977 and has gradually occupied the whole building. The corporation, however, has chosen to retain the old name as its chairman Deepak Parekh believes that the premises have brought good luck to the company.

As a result, HDFC has been the only financial sector giant without its own marquee building even as its subsidiary, HDFC Bank, built its own building in Lower Parel in central Mumbai.

South Asian Jr TT Championship begins in New Delhi

The South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship began at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi .

Indian paddlers start as favourites, as they will be eyeing a clean sweep of all the 10 Gold medals for the second successive year. 

In the last edition held at Shillong, the hosts not only won the Gold in team and individual events of all the four sections - Cadet Boys, Junior Boys, Cadet Girls and Junior Girls - but also claimed four Silver medals in the Singles events.

Flying Sikh’s Bollywood avatar is running pretty fast at the US box office too. Farhan Akhtar-starrer Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has raked upto $647,112 in the first three days of its release in the US over the weekend

Haley Anderson wins 5km open water world title

American swimmer Haley Anderson won the 5km open water race on Saturday to take the first gold medal of the swimming world championships.

Anderson edged Poliana Okimoto of Brazil in a sprint finish in the city’s harbour.

Anderson finished in 56 minutes, 34.2 seconds while Okimoto took second 0.02 behind.

3G tariff war

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) unleashed a tariff war in the 3G data segment.
company slashed monthly tariff by 50%, offering high-speed mobile internet.

RCom has reduced the monthly tariff for 1GB data on 3G to Rs 123 from Rs 250. 

This is even cheaper than the company's 2G monthly tariff that of Rs 125.

Airtel, Vodafone and Idea had last month cut the prices of their internet data plans, but the lower rates were valid only beyond the stipulated standard package prices. 

Currently, Vodafone charges Rs 250 monthly for 1GB data package of 3G and Idea and Bharti also offer a near-similar plan. Their reductions had come for data usage beyond the 1GB limit.

RCom has 3G services in 13 circles that include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Assam and North East.

The lower tariffs are for all kind of connections - pre-paid, post-paid, new and old. RCom has also reduced prices for 2GB and 4GB pack on 3G network.
