Odisha govt. completes land acquisition for POSCO

POSCO-India required 2,700 acres of land to establish an eight million tonne per annum capacity plant and the land was acquired by demolishing as many as 28 betel vines during the day.

The land acquisition process is now complete and we will start construction of the boundary wall and felling of trees on the land once the National Green Tribunal vacated its stay.

Of the required 2700 acres, POSCO-India had already been handed over 1703 acres by the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).

The remaining land will be transferred to the company in due course, Mr. Mallick added.

The 2700 acres acquired for the project were forest land and revenue land.

Though the entire land belonged to the government it was in possession of the locals who were primarily carrying out betel cultivation to earn their livelihood.

Meanwhile, Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, an outfit that had been opposing establishment of the proposed project in the area since 2005, said that their agitation will continue in the days to come. “The villagers will reoccupy the land and reconstruct the betel vines soon.

We will continue our opposition to the establishment of the plant in the locality” said Sangram Samiti spokesperson Prashant Paikray.

China hit by largest-ever algae bloom

The seas off China have been hit by their largest ever growth of algae, ocean officials said, with vast waves of green growth washing onto the shores of the Yellow Sea.

The State Oceanic Administration said on its website that the algae, enteromorpha prolifera, started to appear a week ago and had spread across an area of 28,900 square kilometres (7,500 square miles).

The previous largest bloom was in 2008 when it affected around 13,000 square kilometres.

The algae are not toxic nor detrimental to water quality, but lead to extreme imbalances in marine ecosystems by consuming large quantities of oxygen and creating hydrogen sulphide

UTI appoints Leo Puri as managing director

Leo Puri on Wednesday became the first non-IAS officer to lead UTI Mutual Fund, which has been headless since February 2011 after the then chief UK Sinha moved out to head market regulator Sebi. Puri’s appointment also marks a break from convention as the board and the shareholders of the fifth largest fund house, in which the government is the largest shareholder, agreed to split the post of chairman and managing director.

Prior to his stint at the firm, he was the managing director with the private equity firm Warburg Pincus.

UTI Mutual Fund is one of the largest mutual funds in the country with assets under management of Rs 74,706 crore and has nearly 1 crore investor accounts, under its 88 domestic schemes as of end June.

Last month, the UTI board had reportedly agreed to a proposal to split the CMD’s post and decided to bring in an outsider as the MD and a public sector veteran as the chairman.

Puri’s appointment was, in fact, cleared by the main shareholders last month but it was not sure whether he would take up the post of MD alone, as the initial proposal was to make him the CMD.

The appointment came after the approval of shareholders who met on Wednesday, a company statement said.

The government holds its stake in UTI through the State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda and Life Insurance Corporation which hold 18.5% each, while US investment manager T Rowe Price owns 26

Russia loses $200 million satellites as launch ends in flame

ALMATY, Kazakhstan: A Russian rocket carrying three navigation satellites worth around $200 million crashed shortly after lift-off from the Russian-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan on Tuesday after its engines suddenly switched off.

Russian Prime Minster Dmitry Medvedev, who has said that Russia has lost 10 satellites in seven failed launches in just over one year, ordered tighter controls put in place to avoid more embarrassing mishaps, his spokeswoman told Interfax.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos said the accident had been caused by the emergency switch-off of the rocket's engines 17 seconds into the flight.

The shutdown could have been caused by a problem with the engine or the guidance system, the state-run RIA news agency reported.

The rocket contained 172 tonnes (1 tonne=1.102 tons) of highly toxic heptyl propellant
Talgat Musabayev, head of Kazakhstan's space agency Kazcosmos, said nitric oxide - a product of burning heptyl - was much less toxic for humans.

He said it was raining in the area, so toxic clouds would probably not reach the town of Baikonur some 60 km (38 miles) away.

Russia plans to spend more than 300 billion roubles ($9.1 billion) by 2020 on Glonass, its answer to the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) system.

Country's second largest telecom player Vodafone on Thursday launched Rs 5 per day scheme offering free incoming calls, cheaper outgoing calls and SMS rates during national roaming.
The announcement by Vodafone follows the launch of similar schemes by rivals Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular.

"With these new roaming plans we aim to offer a hassle-free roaming experience to our customers," Vodafone India's chief
