Antony leaves for China, first by Defence Minister in 7 years

Mr. Antony's visit has been seen in Beijing as assuming particular significance as it is the first by a Defence Minister from India in more than seven years – the last was by Pranab Mukherjee in 2006 – and it takes place in the wake of tensions along the border following a three-week stand-off triggered by a Chinese incursion in Ladakh on April 15.

Both sides are also looking to take forward negotiations on a new Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA), although officials said on-going discussions may not be concluded during the visit.

National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, who was in Beijing last week for the 16th round of talks on the boundary dispute, said while there was “a broad measure of agreement” there was still “a little bit of work on the text itself”, with the draft likely to figure in discussions during Mr. Antony’s visit.

Egypt’s army chief removes Morsy

Head of Egypt’s armed forces announced that Mohamed Morsy had been ousted as the country’s president following days of massive protests.

In a televised address to the nation, Egyptian Armed Forces Commander in Chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi announced that the head of the country’s Supreme Constitutional Court would be acting as president, supported by a national unity government until early elections are held.

“The map contains the following: the constitution will be temporarily suspended; the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court will take the oath in front of the full body of the court; early presidential elections will be held,” said Mr Al—Sissi, who was flanked by Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, Coptic Pope Tawadros II and military leaders.

India Under establish Asian power status

India will seek to re-establish itself as a continental power in athletics when the 20th Asian Athletics Championships begins in Pune on from Wednesday.

With a record participation of 577 athletes from 43 countries out of 45 members in the Asian Athletics Association -- the highest ever in the history of the championships -- India is looking to regain some of the lost ground in the five-day flagship event of the AAA, to be held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Stadium at Balewadi in Pune.

The event also assumes significance as the winners will get direct entry for the World Championships to be held in Moscow in August.

India is being represented by a record 107 athletes as it has the luxury of naming three participants in each of the 42 events (21 each for men and women).

The country is expecting around five gold and 15 medals in total.

After an impressive show in 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, the country has nothing to show at the international level.

Meanwhile, as many as 14 defending champions will take part in the Championships with star high jumper Barshim of Qatar one of them.

China, who has ruled Asian athletics for the last 15 editions, has sent the third largest team but not without the likes of up and coming triple jumper Li Jinzhe and high jumper Wang Yu.

Japan, who has sent the second biggest team, has come without the likes of world champion hammer thrower Koji Murofush and sensational teenage 100m sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu, who ran 10.01s to set new world junior record recently

The Championships was being held in Pune after four Indian cities rejected it.
