Unesco panel upgrades Great Himalayan National Park to 'referral' list
World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in its 37th session held in Phnom Penh in Combodia gave a go ahead for inscribing six hill forts of Rajasthan on the world heritage list, but put Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh in 'referral' list.
The 16-member team from India that attended the World Heritage Committee meeting in Phnom Penh from June 16 to June 27, had HP's two senior wildlife officials - additional principal chief conservator of forest (APCCF) Sanjeeva Pandey and GHNP director Ajay Srivastav - on board.
Srivastav told TOI that the UNESCO committee wants to merge Sainj and Tithan wildlife sanctuaries in GHNP. "Their basic concern is of connectivity, which we are already trying (to address) since 2010," he added.
The issue of merging Tirthan and Sainj in GHNP is already pending in the Supreme Court, he added.

Bhartiya Mahila Bank a welcome step, should work on sound commercial principles
The global experience has not been encouraging.
The US, for instance, had nine women's banks between 1975 and 1980. However, the numbers dropped as their business became unviable and profits shrank.
Reports say the status of some that have changed their features is also in doubt.
Pakistan launched its women's bank in 1989, and with stellar consequences, of course, for the status of women.
The least the upcoming bank can do is to have clear commercial goals, as women's empowerment calls for more than banking.

India cuts fuel subsidy to Bhutan
India withdrew all subsidy on cooking gas and kerosene being provided to Bhutan - arguably India's only unquestioned friend among its neighbours - creating a huge crisis in the tiny, landlocked kingdom and bringing the bilateral ties under strain.
The subsidy cut has come against the backdrop of New Delhi smarting since last year when Bhutan PM Jigme Thinley appeared to be cosying up to Beijing.
He had a meeting with the Chinese premier in Rio and also imported some 20 buses from China.
India, which has historically supported Bhutan's foreign policy, including its membership to the UN, was taken by surprise.
India's reservations about Bhutan's policies under Thinley is said to be a key reason why New Delhi reacted very late to bail out the kingdom from its rupee liquidity crunch.
It extended a standby credit facility of Rs 1,000 crore for Bhutan only in January this year during the visit of Bhutan king Jigme Wangchuck with whom New Delhi continues to enjoy excellent relations.

The ban will be in force until further notice.

the dramatic decrease in violence since its peak in 2006 and 2007when the
country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) stated 761
Iraqis were killed and another 1771 were wounded in acts of terrorism and
