Bangalore set to get first blast-proof building by 2014

building resistant to blasts, floods and earthquakes will be ready by early 2014. It will house a vital data hub of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Being built by Engineers India Ltd (EIL), the data centre is coming up next to Tatanagar Main Road, off NH-4, near Sahakarnagar. 

Spread over 6,245 sqm, the centre has a storage capacity of 6 peta bytes with 4,000 servers.

A senior EIL engineer said the building is blast proof with category 'C' rating. "The data storage won't be impacted in explosions. The 500-mm-thick wall makes it a tough structure.

Bangalore Data Centre, which will get CISF cover, will house the primary data (both demographic and biometric) centre for the entire country. 

The data relates to generation of Aadhaar cards.

Yes Bank gets government nod to hike foreign holding

The government has approved private sector lender Yes Bank's proposal to increase foreign holdings in the company to 60 percent that is likely to result in overseas equity inflow of Rs. 2,650 crore.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the proposal.

The cabinet has given its approval based on the recommendations of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

The FIPB had sent the proposal to the cabinet as the amount involved was more than Rs. 1,200 crore, the limit beyond which the board cannot take final decision.

The bank will raise foreign money through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) of its equity shares to eligible non-residents and/or issue of Global Depository Receipts (GDRs) to eligible non-resident investors.

The approval would result in foreign investment amounting to Rs. 2,650 crore approximately being received in the country," according to a statement released here by finance ministry.

Oil India to invest Rs 12,000 crore in northeast

Oil India Ltd said on Tuesday it plans to invest Rs 12,000 crore in the northeast by 2017 on projects, including expansion of exploration work and diversification of business. 

We have set a capex target of Rs 19,000 crore for the 12th Five-Year Plan till 2017. 

Out of this, Rs 12,000 crore will be invested in the northeast," Oil India Ltd (OIL) chairman and MD Sunil Kumar Srivastava told reporters here. 

The state-run company will spend Rs 1,982 crore in the northeast out of the total investment of Rs 3,581 crore planned for the current financial year.

The company has two wind energy plants in Rajasthan with capacities of 13.6 MW and 54 MW. "As part of our diversification strategy, we are also looking to enter the natural gas segment. 

We have appointed a global consultant to see the potential of LNG business in India," Srivastava said. OIL is investing Rs 871 crore to upgrade its pipelines from Duliajan in Assam to Barauni in Bihar. "We are upgrading and revamping our pipelines. 

By mid-2015, we replace all our old fuel pumps from Duliajan to Barauni," Srivastava said.

DMRC to take over Airport Express link from midnight

The Delhi Metro will take over the operations of the 22.7 km long Airport Express link from Sunday midnight

Accordingly, the services of airport metro will commence as usual at 5.15 AM Monday under DMRC's supervision," Anuj Dayal, Executive Director, Corprate Communications said.

Reliance Infra owned Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited (DAMEPL) had written a letter to DMRC on 27th June expressing its inability to continue operations of the Airport Express link.

DMRC has created an Operations and Maintenance team of 100 officials to handle the line.

The Delhi Metro management has also decided to invite feedback and suggestions from the commuters so that the services can be further improved.

Commuters will also be able to post their feedback and suggestions on Delhi Metro's website.

 On 28th June, the DMRC had rejected the notice given by Reliance Infra, and termed it as violation of the Concessionaire Agreement and the ongoing Arbitration proceedings.

The metro line was shut down last July after problems arose due to defects in the civil structure, which were later rectified and it resumed operations in January this year.

IGNOU extends admission date for July session

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for admission to its various academic programmes till July 8

revised dates for the July session are July 8 without late fee and July 31 with late fee for various academic programmes," the statement said.

Earlier, the last date to submit applications at the varsity's regional centres was July 1.

IGNOU is the world's largest open university system with a pan-India and international reach with flexible entry qualifications and a wide range of academic programmes at affordable costs.

Satellites Launched to Bring Rural Areas Online

O3b Networks, whose name represents the other 3 billion in month of June 2013, launched a series of satellites which is supposed to provide fast, cheap Internet and phone service to remote areas in 180 countries.

The idea behind launching such satellite is to bring people from remote area online by the end of the year 2013. Google have already committed to invest about 1.2 billion dollars in support. 

O3b Networks is planning to supply the bandwidth for voice and data traffic to mobile phone operators instead of being sold directly to customers and internet service providers who will be able to track the satellites with ground stations.

A group of four satellites was launched on 25 June 2013 in a Soyuz rocket from French Guiana and it is going to be followed with similar satellite launch of four more in September 2013 and another four next year.

The Outstanding property of the satellite is that is every satellite will be able to transfer data at a rate of 12 gigabits per second. 

Other satellites may eventually be launched to increase the data capacity of the cohort. 

The launch of satellite will provide cheap, fast data transfer to remote areas without Internet access or phone service. 

 The satellite service accessible and affordable, even in poorer regions.

Arunendra Kumar given additional charge of Railway Board Chairman

Railway Board Member (Mechanical) Arunendra Kumar on Monday assumed additional charge as the Chairman of the apex body, which has been mired in controversy over bribery allegations.

Kul Bhushan, Member (Electrical), Railway Board, will look after the duties of Member (Traffic) from July 1 in addition to his own duties, said an official release.

Rajendra Kashyap, Additional, Member (Budget), Railway Board has assumed the additional charge of Financial Commissioner.

While Member (Traffic) post was vacant since last two months ago, the posts of CRB and the Financial Commissioner fell vacant after the retirement of the incumbents on June 30.

The post of Member (Staff) held by Mahesh Kumar, who is under suspension for his alleged role in the cash-for-post scam, will be held by Member (Engineering) Subodh Jain.

Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge had said that steps were being taken to fill vacant posts in the board and appointments would be made after getting clearance from the Central Vigilance Commission

Australia passes damaging work visa restrictions; Indian IT cos to be affected

Australia has followed the United States and Canada in tightening up its work visa programme.
Infosys and Satyam, owned by Tech Mahindra , have the highest exposure to Australia, with about 8-9% of invoices coming from the continent, Nomura analyst Ashwin Mehta said in a note to clients.

Tata Consultancy Services has also been dragged into a visa row in Australia.

Canadian government also requires employers to pay employees on work visas at similar levels to Canadian employees and suspended the fast-track visa approval programme in April.
