Science fiction fans to honor novelist Richard Matheson

Science fiction legend Richard Matheson is to be honored in Los Angeles on Wednesday for his life work following his death Sunday at the age of 87. 

A prolific novelist and screenwriter, Matheson saw many of his writings become major motion pictures, including "I Am Legend" starring Will Smith in 2007. 

He also penned 14 episodes of the classic TV series "The Twilight Zone." obert Holguin said the 39th Saturn awards, where Matheson was to have been presented with the academy's Visionary Award, would be dedicated to his memory instead.

Matheson wrote more than 25 novels and nearly 100 short stories in a career that began when he published his first short story "Born of Man and Woman" at the age of 24.

Army launches website on Uttarakhand relief

The site also provides information about the location of people, helpline numbers, lists of those rescued and their current location.


A spokesman for the Central Command told IANS that the website was a one-stop helpline for people in distress following the natural calamity in Uttarakhand.

The Indian Army on Wednesday launched a website — suryahopes.in — to provide updates on the whereabouts of people stranded in disaster-hit Uttarakhand.

India’s first national aviation university soon

law ministry endorsed the civil aviation ministry’s draft bill for the university, to be named after former prime minister, the late Rajiv Gandhi.

The centre has sanctioned an initial amount of Rs. 80 crore and around 26 acres of land for the university.

PM, Sonia flag off first train connecting Jammu to Kashmir Valley

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday flagged off the first train connecting Banihal in Jammu region with Qazigund in Kashmir Valley.

The newly constructed station in Banihal, 125 km from summer capital Srinagar, flagging off the first train which will pass through 11 km tunnel through Pir Panchal range.

The Banihal-Qazigund section, which includes an 11-km long tunnel, the country's longest, reduces the 35 km distance to 18 km.It has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,691 crore.

The Udhampur-Banihal section is expected to be completed by 2017 connecting the Valley to the rest of the country round-the-year without any hindrance.

The train will make regular operation from Banihal to Baramulla in north Kashmir from 27th June.

Oprah tops Forbes most powerful celebrity list

After two years as a runner-up, Oprah Winfrey was named the most powerful celebrity on Wednesday by Forbes, heading the six women and four men who make up the top 10.

Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce and Madonna.

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, who was No. 1 last year, dropped to 12th place.

But Forbes said Winfrey's position in Hollywood and her presence in the press, on television and in social media propelled her to the No. 1 spot.

Spielberg, with earnings of $100 million in the last year, was the top man on the list, ahead of rock star Bon Jovi at No. 7, tennis champion Roger Federer and Justin Bieber, the youngest member of the list, squeezed into the top ten at No. 9.

India, Hungary join hands for ‘gas monitoring system’

Gujarat Info Petro Ltd, a subsidiary of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, has signed an agreement with Cason Engineering Plc, Hungary, in pursuant to the MoU signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit-2013, for a gas monitoring system.

This agreement was signed between VK Sharma, CEO, Gujarat Info, and Ferenc Szakács, Chairman and CEO of Cason.

Gujarat Info provides IT services to government departments, boards, corporations and corporate houses as an apex consultant and total solutions provider.

Cason is a Hungary-based technology company having experience in developing, manufacturing and implementing systems for gas distribution network monitoring.

 It has developed and installed new solutions with leading technologies for large oil pipeline operators in Europe and other countries worldwide.

The agreement aims to provide automation services for gas and oil companies in India.

Advantages of the offered solutions are to provide tool to control the procurement and sales procedures of daily purchased gas volume and to provide access for stakeholders to the relevant daily business data with technology reports and alarms via Web-based applications.

This will provide solutions for disaster management and security issues of cross-country pipelines.

Intel introduces 4th generation core processors

Intel today introduced 4th generation Intel core processors, which the company claims will reinvent personal computing with longer battery life, more advanced graphics and new usages in devices

The latest processors are capable of delivering upto 15 per cent better performance than the previous generation, while consuming lower amounts of power.

PC makers like Acer, Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Lenovo are in the process of launching products with the latest Intel processor.

Dell will release its XPS 12 ultrabook in the first week of July, whereas, HP will soon be launching its HP Envy AiO (All-in-One) PC.

Similarly, Lenovo will launch its AiO PC in the coming couple of months, which will be powered by the Intel 4th generation core processor.

Silvio Berlusconi sentenced to 7 years Jail in Sex Trial

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was sentenced to seven years in prisons and a lifetime ban on holding public office by a lower court of Milan as he was found guilty of soliciting sex from a minor and abusing his powers to cover up his actions.

Pipavav Port Regained Top Position in Seafood Exports

Pipavav port, the first private sector port of India located in Saurashtra, Gujarat, remained at the top most position for second year in a row in FY13 on the basis of quantity. 

The Pipavav port registered a jump of 6 percent in comparison to 2012-13 financial year. The reason why Pipavav port remained a forerunner in terms of quantity was because it handled lot of pre-processed fish.

The export figures by the Marine Products Export Development Authority revealed that Pipavav port handled 233738 tonnes of marine exports in 2013-14 in comparison to 219801 tonnes in 2012-13 fiscal year. 

In terms of value, nevertheless, Kochi as well as Vizag ports shared almost equal share of earning, i.e., 3344.97 crore and Rs 3265.64 crore respectively in 2013-14 financial year. 

Pipavav port is the first private sector port of India on West Coast.

Karnataka to allow FDI in multi-brand retail

Karnataka has joined 11 other states and Union territories that have agreed to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail. Industry bodies have welcomed the decision, calling a step in the right direction.

Earlier this month, Himachal Pradesh agreed to allow 51% FDI in the sector. 

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Manipur are among the states that have decided to implement the decision.

Marc Rich, the man who invented the spot-oil market dies at 78

Marc Rich, the commodities trader who fled the US to avoid federal indictments during the 1980s before President Bill Clinton pardoned him two decades later, has died. 

He was 78 AND became one of the most wanted white-collar fugitives in American history for 17 years. 

After leaving the US, he founded a commodities trader that became the forerunner of today's Glencore Xstrata Plc.


He fled to Switzerland hours before being indicted in 1983 on more than 50 counts of wire fraud, racketeering, trading with Iran during an embargo, and evading more than $48 million in US income taxes. 

On the last day of his presidency in January 2001, Clinton pardoned Rich, who maintained his innocence.

Ashish Nanda set to take over as IIM-A director

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad is all set to get its first head from overseas. Sources said Harvard Law School's professor Ashish Nanda has accepted the offer to be the next director and has already applied for leave at Harvard.

IIM-A sent three names to the MHRD for appointment of the director after the search and selection committee headed by IIM-A board chairman A M Naik finalised the names of candidates at a meeting. 

Three candidates-Nanda, G Raghuram and Rakesh Basant - were forwarded to MHRD to select a successor to Samir Barua, whose extended term ended on March 31.

A Robert Braucher Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School Nanda is faculty director of executive education at the university. Before joining Harvard Law School, Nanda was a Harvard Business School faculty member for 13 years.
