Lydia Davis won 5th Man Booker International Prize 2013
About Lydia Davis
As the oldest man to climb Mount Everest, he replaced
Nepal's Min Bahadur Sherchan who climbed the Everest at the age of 76 years in
2008.It is important to note that Min Bahadur Sherchan will
again attempt climbing Mount Everest
Wal-Mart registered Wal-Mart India Private Ltd in India to enter the lucrative multi-brand market in
India.
Wal-Mart India Private Ltd was registered as a new entity
with Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
The Wal-Mart and Bharthi Enterprises in 2013 decided to
independently own and operate their business formats in India.
A controversy --when
Wal-Mart declared that it has spent 25 million dollars on lobbying activities
that included enhanced market access for investment in India and for no law
that bars it from lobbying in India.

Telecom regulator TRAI a new Secretary, Sudhir Gupta, ahead of it
releasing the final guidelines of spectrum trading and auction of CDMA radio
waves.
Gupta, a principal adviser with TRAI, has been seek to the
post of Secretary.
In the past years at TRAI, Gupta has played a key role in
almost all the key regulations, recommendations and directions. This include
mobile number portability regulation, rules to curb pesky calls, quality of
service standards.
He has been responsible for formulating recommendations
related to spectrum auctions, 3G and later BWA spectrum auctions.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime could face war
crimes charges in international court, after top war crime prosecutors claimed
to have direct evidence of "systematic torture and killing" of about 11,000
detainees by his forces.
ii. Lawyers acting for the Arab state of Qatar released a
report, which includes thousands ofphotographs of the dead bodies of detainees
allegedly killed in government custody, many of whom severely malnourished and
showing signs of strangulation, the Independent reports.

Amul launches India’s first ‘milk ATM’
The 24x7 ATM began with the installation of a vending
machine at the gate of Amul Dairy in Anand town of Gujarat .
To start with, we plan to set up these ATMs at each of the
1,100 ‘mandalis’ (village-level milk collection centres) in Kheda and Anand
districts where we market Amul, Ramsinh Parmar, Chairman, Kheda District Milk
Producers’ Union, popularly known as Amul Dairy.
For Rs 10 which this
machine will read through a sensor, the ATM would dispense a 300 ml pouch of
Amul Taaza milk.
The ATM with refrigeration facility, has a capacity to hold
150 pouches at a time.

Lydia Davis won 5th Man Booker International Prize 2013
i. American writer Lydia Davis won 2013 Man Booker
International Prize for her innovative and influential writing.
ii. The winner of the Prize was announced at the awards
ceremony at Victoria and Albert Museum in London . This was the
fifth Man Booker International Prize.

About Lydia Davis
i. Lydia Davis is a professor of creative writing at the University
of Albany.
ii. She is also an accomplished translator.
iii. Her works includes The End of the Storyand Varieties of
Disturbance.
iv. Lydia Davis is also known for her work as a translator
of French literature and philosophy, most notably of Marcel Proust and Gustave
Flaubert.
v. Her translations led her to be named a Chevalier of the
Order of Arts and Letters by the French government.
Note:
The Man Booker International Prize recognises one
writer for his or her achievement in fiction.Worth 60000 ponds, the prize is awarded every two years
to a living author who has published fiction either originally in English or
whose work is generally available in translation in the English language.The winner is chosen solely at the discretion of the
judging panel and there are no submissions from publishers.The Man Booker International Prize is significantly
different from the annual Man Booker Prize for Fiction. In seeking out literary
excellence, the judges consider a writer's body of work rather than a single
novel.Well-known Kannada author UR Ananthamurthy was
the only Indian to be shortlisted for the prestigious award.
Indian-origin boy wins National Geographic Bee contest
Sathwik Karnik, an Indian-origin boy from Massachusetts has won this year's National Geographic Bee contest after gruelling rounds testing his geographic knowledge about lions in Botswana, mountain ranges in Asia and port cities in England.To clinch this title, Karnik, 12, correctly named Chimborazo as the mountain in Ecuador that represents the farthest point from the Earth's center.Karnik, a native of Norfolk, south of Boston, is a 7th grader at King Philip Regional Middle School while his family hails from south India.Karnik will take home the spoils of the Bee prize that include a USD 25,000 college scholarship, an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands, and a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society, National Geographic reported.National Geographic Bee is an annual geography contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society since 1989.
Pratibha Ray Conferred With the 47th
Jnanpith Award for the Year 2011

i. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee conferred the
47th Jnanpith Award for the year 2011 on Pratibha Ray on 22 May 2013 at Balyogi
Auditorium in New Delhi.
ii. The award includes cash prize of 11 lakh Rupees, a
citation as well as bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati.
About Dr. Pratibha Ray
i. Pratibha Ray was born in Alabol, a village in Jagatsingpur
district of Odisha.She is the first Oriya woman and fourth Oriya writer to
get the coveted award. Prior to her, Sitakant Mahapatra (1993), Sachidananda
Rout Roy (1986) and Gopinath Mohanty (1973) were the other Oriya writers to be
conferred with this award. The most acclaimed work of Pratibha Ray was Yajnaseni,
for which she received Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust’s Moorti Devi Award in 1991.She was the first woman to be conferred with this
prestigious Moorti Devi Award in 1991.
About the Jnanpith Award
i. The Jnanpith Award is one of the highest literary honours
of India. Other honour includes Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
ii. This award was instituted first in 1961 and is presented
by Bharatiya Jnanpith, the trust founded by Sahu Jain family, the publishers of
The Times of India newspaper.
iii. G. Sankara Kurup was the first one to receive this
award in 1965.
iv. Post 2011, the cash prize of this award has been
increased from 7 lakh Rupees to 11 lakh Rupees.
First Yoga university inaugurated in
Ahmedabad by CM Modi
The first - ever Yoga University was inaugurated in
Ahmedabad today by the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.The university LAKULISH YOGA UNIVERSITY has a special
provision for degree course in Yoga. There will be three years “YOGA” course, which includes
6 - semesters and people below the age of 35 years are eligible to get
admission in this course.
Yuichiro Miura, Became Oldest Man to
Climb Mount Everest

i. Yuichiro Miura, the 80-year old mountaineer from Japan reached
Mount Everest’s summit on 23 May 2013.
ii. With this, he became the oldest man to climb the highest
mountain peak of the world.
iii. Yuichiro Miura climbed the Everest at the age of 70 and
75 as well.
Sonia Gandhi, Nooyi among 10 most
powerful women globally
i. Congress President Sonia Gandhi and India-born PepsiCo
chief Indra Nooyi figure among the top 10 in the global list of most powerful
women compiled by Forbes magazine for 2013.
ii. Gandhi is ranked ninth while Nooyi is at the 10th place
in the global list of world's 100 most powerful women.
iii. German Chancellor Angela Merkel tops the list for the
third consecutive year, followed by Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff,
Melinda Gates of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, US First lady Michelle
Obama and philanthropist Hillary Clinton.
iv. Private sector lender ICICI Bank Managing Director and
CEO Chanda Kochhar is ranked 65th and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has
secured the 85th spot in the global list.
v. According to Forbes, this year's list represents
influential women in politics, business, media, entertainment, technology and
non-profits -- ranking them by money, media presence and impact.
vi. Germany's Merkel has made it to the list eight times in
the past ten years and has been ranked first seven times.
vii. From the entertainment and media segment, Oprah Winfrey
bagged 13th spot, pop singer Beyonce at 17th place and actors Angelina Jolie
and Sofia Vergara 37th and 38th respectively.
viii. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg (6th), Christine IMF
Managing Director Christine Lagarde (7th), Aung San Suu Kyi (29th) and Queen
Elizabeth II (40th) are among others who made it to the list.
Nigerian Author Chinua Achebe died
following a Brief Illness
Renowned Nigerian author Chinua Achebe died in Boston at the age of 82 following a brief illness. He had been living in the US since 1990 after a car
crash left him partially paralysed and in a wheelchair.South African writer and Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer
called him the father of modern African literature in 2007 ,she was among the judges to award him the Man
Booker International Prize in honour of his literary career in the same year.

Rajasthan Royals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets
in the Pepsi IPL eliminator which was held in New Delhi.Chasing a target of 133, Hodge hit Darren Sammy for two
consecutive sixes to finish the match with four balls to spare and ensure his
team's qualification to the next edition of Champions League T20.Royals will now meet Mumbai Indians in the second
qualifier in Kolkata on Friday.’
Preeti Beniwal won gold in 2013 Senior National
Womens Boxing Championship
Pugilist Preeti Beniwal bagged the gold
medal in Senior National Women's Boxing Championship. In the event held at Khatima, uttarakhand, Preeti
out-punched Manipur's Y Sandhya 22-9 in the final of the 60kg category.Preeti Beniwal was born on 25 December 1987. She hails
from Hisar.Her father Subey Singh is a boxing coach.Her elder sister is married to famous Indian Boxer Akhil
Kumar.Preeti is employed with Haryana Police as sub inspector.
Mumbai Police summon Gurunath Meiyappan
i. CEO of Chennai Super Kings Gurunath Meiyappan has been
asked to appear on Friday in Mumbai before Crime Branch police there in
connection with the IPL betting scandal,
ii. Mr. Meyiyappan with whom arrested Bollywood actor Vindoo
Randhawa was allegedly in touch, were also believed to have served summons to
Mr. Meiyappan through his secretary at his Boat Club residence in this
connection,
iii. Mr. Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI president N.
Srinivasan, has been asked to appear before Mumbai crime branch.Vindoo made several calls to Meiyappan of the Chennai
IPL. The actor was arrested for his alleged association with
bookies. Randhawa, winner of reality TV show Bigg Boss season 3, was allegedly
in touch with some bookies held in the scandal.
Sanjay Dutt prisoner number
16656
The new identity for Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is
prisoner number 16656 at Yeravada Central Jail where he was shifted
from Mumbai's Arthur Road Prison following his surrender before a TADA court.Dutt, whose conviction in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case
was upheld by the Supreme Court in March this year, was brought to Yeravada
jail at the crack of dawn yesterday.Sources said Dutt will be given prescribed manual work
job in due course after formalities of admission are over.There will not be any special treatment to the actor
except required due to the threat perception, they added.
Manmohan Singh laid the Foundation Stone of National Defence University
i. The Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh on 23 May 2013 laid the foundation stone of the Indian National Defence University (INDU) at Binola, Gurgaon.
ii. The university is going to be an autonomous institution of national importance.
iii. The Defence University came up following the recommendation of the Review Committee constituted after the Kargil Conflict by the Government for the establishment of a University that deals exclusively with defence and strategic matters.
iv. The review committee was headed by eminent strategic expert K Subrahmanyam
