1.     PSLV’s biggest commercial lift

The Indian Space Research Organisation is set to make another mark in its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) launcher business when it will fly French earth observation satellite SPOT 6 on 09 september. In the 13 years since the PSLV went commercial, the 720 kg SPOT 6 will be its biggest commercial lift. PROITERES, a 15-kg Japanese observation satellite, will also be put in orbit. For the third time in 21 PSLV (one failed) missions, there will be no Indian satellite on it. In the other two ‘dedicated’ or exclusively-for-client launches, it put in orbit 350 kg Agile in 2007 and Israeli radar spy satellite TECSAR the following year. Agile has been its biggest lift to date. France has chosen an outside launch for a SPOT for the first time: the previous five SPOT satellites went up on aboard earlier versions of European Ariane rocket.

3.     Bill on special status for Hyderabad-Karnataka
In Lok Sabha Home Minister Sushi lkumar Shinde introduced a Bill to amend the Constitution and thus provide a special status to the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, under a new Article 371 (J), thus fulfilling the 11-year demand of the people of the area. Once it is approved by Parliament with two-thirds majority, which is possible only in the winter session as the monsoon session got washed out, the Hyderabad-Karnataka region covering six backwards districts – Bidar, Gulbarga, Koppal, Yadgir, Raichur and Bellary – will get more central funds for development and will be on par with the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. Besides, there will be reservation in jobs and education for the locals.
3. Re-elected president
Syed Muneer Ahmed has been unanimously re-elected president of the National Chamber of Commerce, at a recent annual general body meeting of the Chamber, which is affiliated to FICCI.
4. Vendors Bill introduced in Lok Sabha
The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood & Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2012, was presented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of Urban Housing & Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja. The Bill, which seeks to protect the rights of vendors and regulate their activity in public areas, has provisions for setting up vending zones where street vendors can sell their products without fear of being fined and harassed by the municipal authorities and the police. As per the provisions of the Bill, anyone over 14 years of age who intends to do street vending can register himself/herself with the Town Vending Committee (TVC). Every TVC will have grievance redressal committee headed by retired sub judge or magistrate or executive magistrate.
5.E-payment of customs duty is now a must
The government has decided to make e-payment mandatory for importers registered under ‘Accredited Clients Programme’ and those paying customs duty of Rs.1 lakh or more per bill of entry. The trade facilitation measure, aimed at further reducing the transaction cost of importers, will come into effect from September 17, 2012.
While e-payment is advantageous to both the trade as well as the government, it affords taxpayers the facility of making payments from their own offices on a 24x7 basis and also facilitates quicker release of cargo. E-payment facility at customs locations was introduced in 2007, and is available through more than one authorised bank at all major customs locations having ICES (Indian Customs EDI System) facility.
6. America designates Haqqani network as terrorist outfit
America has designated Haqqani Network terror outfit in Afghanistan as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. The network is said to have been behind string of deadly attacks in Kabul and elsewhere, most prominently including a bombing of the Indian embassy and an assault on the U.S. embassy using rockets.
7. Commonwealth meet begins
A conference of Commonwealth MPs and presiding officers of State/provinces started at Colombo. More than 800 delegates from 53 countries and 179 branches have confirmed their participation. 8. Karnataka State government plans reservation for sportspersons
The State government is planning to introduce 2 per cent reservation for sports-persons in government jobs. The policy would be formulated in the honour of H. N. Girisha. The government would honour H.N. Girisha, who bagged a silver medal at the Paralympic Games, with a purse of Rs. 20 lakh. In China, sportspersons are trained for three years ahead of such events. They win more medals because of such efforts.
9. BIFR nod for revival of 3 closed urea units of FCIL
The Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) has given the nod for revival of three closed urea units of the Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd. (FCIL) the joint venture/special purpose vehicle (SPV) route by the nominated state-run firms. Last month, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved the revival of the Talcher urea plant along with four other closed units of FCIL at Sindri, Ramagundam, Gorakhpur and Korba. The Talcher unit in Odisha will be revamped by Coal India and Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF), the Sindri unit in Jharkhand by the Steel Authority of India and National Fertilizers, and the Ramagundam unit in Andhra Pradesh by Engineers India and National Fertilisers.
10. Bryans win record-equalling 12th Grand Slam
Bob and Mike Bryan collected a record-equalling 12th Grand Slam men’s doubles title when they defeated Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4 in the US Open final. The second-seeded American brothers went level with Australia’s John Newcombe and Tony Roche as the most successful partnership of all time. this win was their fourth at the US Open, following triumphs in 2005, 2008 and 2010. They also won the 2003 French Open, the 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Australian Open titles as well as Wimbledon in 2006 and 2011.
